Church forces 'secular NZ' retreat
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/religion-and-beliefs/news/article.cfm?c_id=301&objectid=10658644
The Human Rights Commission has bowed to Catholic Church objections to a statement that New Zealand was a secular state and that religion was only for the "private sphere". The statement, contained in a draft update of the commission's 2004 report on Human Rights in New Zealand Today, drew fire this week from the country's Catholic bishops...
Place of religion: a letter to the editor of the 'NZ Herald' (full text)
New Zealand Herald - A010 - 15 July 2010
I was intrigued to read the headline ``Church forces secular NZ retreat'' and the report that the Human Rights Commission had ``bowed to Catholic Church objections to a statement that New Zealand was a secular state and that religion was only for the private sphere''. The Catholic Bishops Conference and the Rationalists and Humanists Association, among others, made submissions on the commission's draft review of the right to freedom of religion and belief. They both made useful points, and without any force being offered or bowing taking place, the revised draft will take account of their submissions. The full review of human rights will be published this year. Draft sections for public comment are available on our website (www.hrc.co.nz). The review will make it clear there is a strong tradition of a separation of church and state, and people have the freedom to believe or not to believe, individually or with others, without interference from the state. Joris de Bres, Race Relations Commissioner, Human Rights Commission.
Secular state: a letter to the editor of the 'NZ Herald' (full text)
New Zealand Herald - A018 - 17 July 2010
On behalf of the New Zealand Catholic bishops, I wish to clarify an assumption made in the article headlined ``Church forces `secular NZ' retreat''. The article relates to a draft discussion document of the Human Rights Commission and, in particular, the document's suggestion that New Zealand was a secular state and that religion was only for the private sphere. It is not correct to suggest the commission's draft discussion document ``drew fire'' from the Catholic bishops or that the church forced a retreat. The commission had courteously invited public comment on the document and the bishops courteously made suggestions, which the commission accepted. BISHOP PETER CULLINANE, Catholic Diocese of Palmerston North.

The panel returns with a series of hot topics to tackle this month, including the Belgian police raids that saw a number of a number of Catholic bishops detained as well as the upcoming visit of the Holy Father to the United Kingdom. We also discuss the Vatican's newspaper endorsement of The Blues Brothers and their "Mission from God", with L'Osservatore Romano saying it's undoubtedly a Catholic film. The Rhythm is Gonna Get You: The Church Year (8 July 2010)
The Church's calendar is sometimes said to have a "rhythm" as we cycle from Advent to Christmas through Ordinary Time into Lent, Eastertide and back into Ordinary Time. How did this pattern evolve? When did Christians start keeping Sunday as holy, rather than the Jewish Sabbath? Was Jesus really born on December 25? And does it matter? Catechiwi regular Fr Merv Duffy, SM, sheds some light on those questions and others in this month's episode.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen, Jr.

Pope's reluctance to impose American way not a shocker
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/popes-reluctance-impose-american-way-not-shocker
A July 9 editorial in The New York Times called upon Pope Benedict XVI to make the American bishops' "zero tolerance" approach to sexual abuse binding on the worldwide Catholic church. In principle that's a perfectly reasonable idea, especially since Vatican spokespersons routinely invoke the pope's defense of the tough American rules as proof that he gets it. Yet the editorial also used the word "shocking" to describe the fact that eight years after the American policies were developed, the pontiff has not yet imposed them on the rest of the world. That's where people who know the lay of the land in the church will probably balk, because aside from the fact that Rome has an evolutionary sense of time (in which eight years seems a nanosecond), there are three other reasons why this is hardly a shocker...
