With the Government having committed $176 million for a Maori television
channel, Brenon O'Flaherty reports on some of the Pakeha who have taken
to this country's second official language. One of today's leading Maori
language educators, Catholic priest Mick Ryan, also has his name on a
Maori dictionary and language instruction texts.......

'Farewell to the fathers '

The Marist order of priest-teachers played an important role in early
Canterbury, but they have been withdrawing from Catholic schools. Next
year they leave St Bedes, writes Mike Crean. Leaving will be a wrench
for Fr Kevin Manning, who came to St Bede's in 1959. Apart from four
years in Timaru and two in the United States, he has been there ever
since. He retired from teaching 10 years ago..........

'Redemptorists close Bower Ave monastery ' (photo)

More than 50 years of religious service in Canterbury has come to an end
for a Catholic order. Priests of the Redemptorist order marked the
closing of their monastery and church in Bower Avenue, New Brighton,
with a special Mass and ceremony yesterday.......
