Sister Sue Cosgrove is one of the Sisters of Compassion, formerly of the Jerusalem convent founded by Suzanne Aubert on the Whanganui River, and now of the Home of Compassion at Island Bay. A documentary at the New Zealand Film Festival covers the work of the Sisters alongside the local community at Jerusalem.

Philanthropist Hugh Green dies
Auckland philanthropist Hugh Green has died at the age of 80. The Irish-born farmer, building contractor and investor was named New Zealand's 23rd richest person in last year's National Business Review Rich List with a fortune of some $350 million.

Mama Mia inspires Tongan youth (photo)
Veronica Motuliki has a wish list. It is not for herself but for the young people who have sought her help at Glendowie community centre. She runs Sangato Mikaele Lataki, or the St Michael Youth Eastern Zone group. It's a Tongan Catholic youth group where everyone calls her "Mama Mia".

Priest celebrates 100th birthday (photo)
A special mass was held to celebrate the 100th birthday of Silverstream Home of Compassion resident Father George Duggan last Tuesday.

Cardinal here again
Not every small parish is lucky enough to have a cardinal as parish priest, but Cardinal Tom Williams is more than happy to come out of retirement to serve the Kaikoura community while Father Eric Urlich is on leave.

The twelfth Blessing of Nelson's Fishing Fleet is scheduled for Saturday July 21, paying its annual tribute to those who have lost their lives at sea, along with the blessing of boats prior to the hoki season.

100th birthday celebrated (photo)
A major milestone was marked in Waimate, when great-grandmother Eileen Cooney turned 100 on Saturday. A birthday celebration was held at Lister Home where she is a resident.

Emotion at family reunion (photo)
Phyllis Timms' mother, Katie, died in Sydney in 1968 and had lived her life thinking she was an only child. On Friday, Mrs Timms made her first visit to Wanganui to see where her grandmother, Katie's mother Hannah Quillinan, who was 29 at the time of her death, rests with Katie's brothers John and Thomas and sister Hannah, in the Heads Rd Cemetery.

Real war on religion and a ticking Vatican PR bomb

America's annual celebration of Independence Day was accompanied this year by the U.S. bishops' Fortnight for Freedom, a round of prayer and advocacy dedicated to the preservation of religious liberty. The exercise renewed debate over whether there is or isn't a war on religion in America, fueled, of course, by the politics of the 2012 election. Too often lost in the shuffle is the fact that in a growing number of other places, there's a decidedly literal war on religion under way. Its victims don't just lose government contracts or debates over insurance mandates; they're threatened, beaten, imprisoned and even murdered...
