In 1972 Paul Way was an alcoholic and his friends had become so concerned they put him on the plane to Christchurch in the hope of getting him to a rehabilitation clinic in Hanmer. It took eight months before he made it, but he has been sober ever since. Originally from Blenheim, Paul has taken over from Father Alan Roberts as the new spiritual adviser at the St Marks Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centre.

Rotorua's Peter Pomare has died. The 22-year-old, who had a brain tumour removed in Australia by a controversial neurosurgeon 10 months ago, died at his parents' home on Saturday night surrounded by his wife, Angie, children Aliyah, 4, and 12-month-old Taiamai, parents Ben and Maria, his sisters and other family members.
