LENT 2013

Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand: Lent Resources Online: http://www.caritas.org.nz/resources/lent

Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving in preparation for Easter. In 2013 it began on Ash Wednesday 13 February and continues to Easter.

The theme for the Bishops' Lent Appeal 2013, taken from a Papal letter to the Church in the Pacific, is: Follow faithfully the way, Tell courageously the truth, Live joyfully the life. Kia pono te whai atu i te huarahi, Kia maia te whakapuaki i te pono, Kia harikoa te manawa i te oranga.

The Lent Appeal is run by Caritas on behalf of New Zealand's Catholic Bishops to support its work of charity and justice for the world's poorest – in New Zealand and overseas.

Resources - available at http://www.caritas.org.nz/resources/lent - have been prepared for parishes, schools, small groups and the wider community. Olivina Tu'iono from Caritas Tonga is also visiting schools and parishes throughout New Zealand from 9 February-10 March to share her experience working with poor and marginalised people in Tonga.

Station XV: Episode 66 — Habemus papam

There's really only one story to talk about this month, and it's the election of Pope Francis. What a momentous occasion for the Church and what great interest it received from around the world. James, Marcus, Shannon and Gavin talk about the announcement, the man himself, the name he chose, their (very) early reactions, the big priorities he faces and even find some time to mention a light story, with a US TV show seeking to demonstrate the ignorance of the average Joe or Joanne on the street asking what they thought of the new Pope — days before he was announced. Enjoy the show, and tell your friends.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC - John L. Allen Jr

The real winner of the 2013 conclave: St. Francis of Assisi

Although 76-year-old Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires was the one who stepped out onto the balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square clad in white Wednesday night, there's a good argument that the real winner of the 2013 conclave wasn't in Rome, and wasn't even alive to see the result. In effect, the landslide winner was actually St. Francis of Assisi. The case for the 2013 papal election as a tribute to the most iconic saint in Catholic tradition rests on three points...
