Back to basic Christianity growing in popularity, as some traditional churches struggle to pay the bills

A cluster of elderly parishioners whisper reverently, as dappled coloured light seeps through the spectacular stained glass windows in the majestic gothic style church. They are ready for the vicar to lead the traditional Sunday service at St Mary's in the heart of Timaru. At the same time, a 15-minute drive away in Temuka, another group of Christians known as The Gathering meet in a bare hall. They have no leader, no service plan and a couple of acoustic guitars...

The unique history of a Tamahere bed and breakfast

Down a curling gravel road in Tamahere an arching sign reads 'Passionist Monastery' in black letters. This is the first clue signalling the boutique bed and breakfast's interesting past. A series of luminous stained glassed windows might be the second...

Obituary: Marcia Keys (nee Fuller) June 2, 1930 – July 13, 2019
https://www.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times/news/115732240/obituary-marcia-keys-nee-fuller-june-2-1930--july-13-2019
Marcia Keys, who has died aged 89, lived all her married life in Haultain Street in the house she and husband John built in Fairfield, a suburb named after the farm that had occupied the land less than 10 years earlier, and a short walk from the bridge drovers used to get their animals to the Frankton sale yards. The newlywed couple chose Haultain Street, on what was then the northernmost edge of the town, at least partly because it fell in the orbit of St Joseph's Church in nearby Clarkin Road which was developing a strong Catholic community under Father Walls, the first priest.

Taking a page from a western novel, Wanaka delivered a memorable night out earlier this month, raising $8000 for Holy Family Catholic School. The Pembroke Wild West event was a social night for about 100 guests who visited the recently refurbished Pembroke Pavilion, which was adorned with hay bales, saddles and a saloon-style moonshine bar.

Episode 142 — Appeal, Schism, Renewal, Technology (September 16, 2019)

Cardinal George Pell's unsuccessful appeal on his conviction for historical child sexual abuse leads this month's episode. Anna, Don, James and Gavin consider the outcome and what might come next. Pope Francis has spoken about the prospect of schism within the Church, while in New Zealand a Marist priest is more focused on renewal. And technology — the Australian bishops' statement on social media and the emergence of robotic preachers — rounds out the show. Thanks for listening and tell a friend.

** In season of synods, Italy may be next to see if pope's gamble pays off

It seems, we may soon be able to add Italy to the list of places either contemplating or planning its own synod. The drumbeat began in February with an essay by Italian Jesuit Father Antonio Spadaro in Civiltà Cattolica, which enjoys semi-official Vatican status.  "Only an effective exercise of synodality within the Church can help us read our situation today and engage in discernment," Spadaro wrote, making the case for a national synod. "And this can only happen thanks to broad involvement of the People of God, in a synodal process that's not restricted either to the elites of Catholic thought or to the contexts (specific and important) of formation."

** Letters to Blessed John Henry Newman show his role as pastor, evangelist

Thousands of documents relating to England's 19th-century convert-cardinal, Blessed John Henry Newman, are being released ahead of his Oct. 13 canonization, highlighting his role as a pastor and evangelist, said church experts. Although 32 annotated volumes of the cardinal's letters and diaries have been published over the past five decades, the new material includes letters and correspondence to the future saint.
