Nelson health professionals are supporting a Nelson doctor's right not to
supply contraceptives to patients because of his Catholic faith. Nelson GP
Joseph Hassan wrote to 50 of his female patients last week, saying he would
no longer prescribe the pill or other active forms of birth control. He
would not refer patients for sterilisation procedures either. He wrote that
he believed fertility was a gift and not something to be medicated like a
disease...

Commissioning signals the start of formal lay ministry
It was a significant and joyous moment when Jackie Jansen, the first
graduate from the lay formation programme, Launch Out, was commissioned by
Archbishop John Dew at St Peter and Paul’s parish church, Lower Hutt. In his
homily Archbishop John acknowledged the four years Jackie has spent in his
formation programme. He also highlighted the impact Jackie has already made
in his short time as a lay minister at Arohata prison. The commissioning
service was led by Brother Kieran Garvey, the senior prison chaplain, and
was attended by several other prison chaplains....
Catholics told to scan the margins for credibility signs
The church needs to listen to the people on its fringes to make itself
credible in today’s world, says one speaker at the recent colloquium to mark
the Palmerston North diocese’s 25th birthday. The four-day colloquium drew
speakers from New Zealand and Australia and asked them to address the issue
of creed and credibility in a critical age. One of the speakers, Jacquie
Lambert, who has worked most recently as a spiritual director, but also as a
critical care nurse, nursing lecturer, polytech chaplain, Benedictine oblate
and writer, told the seminar the church needed to listen to the darkest,
most forgotten corner of its membership, the fringe dwellers, because it was
in danger of losing them....
