Catholic doctor's stance backed
The Nelson Mail â€" News â€" 15 Oct 2005 â€" Page 1
Nelson health professionals are supporting a Nelson doctor's right not to
supply contraceptives to patients because of his Catholic faith. Nelson GP
Joseph Hassan wrote to 50 of his female patients last week, saying he would
no longer prescribe the pill or other active forms of birth control. He
would not refer patients for sterilisation procedures either. He wrote that
he believed fertility was a gift and not something to be medicated like a
disease...

Archbishop's column - Br Roger still has a great deal to give
Commissioning signals the start of formal lay ministry
It was a significant and joyous moment when Jackie Jansen, the first
graduate from the lay formation programme, Launch Out, was commissioned by
Archbishop John Dew at St Peter and Paul’s parish church, Lower Hutt. In his
homily Archbishop John acknowledged the four years Jackie has spent in his
formation programme. He also highlighted the impact Jackie has already made
in his short time as a lay minister at Arohata prison. The commissioning
service was led by Brother Kieran Garvey, the senior prison chaplain, and
was attended by several other prison chaplains....
Catholics told to scan the margins for credibility signs
The church needs to listen to the people on its fringes to make itself
credible in today’s world, says one speaker at the recent colloquium to mark
the Palmerston North diocese’s 25th birthday. The four-day colloquium drew
speakers from New Zealand and Australia and asked them to address the issue
of creed and credibility in a critical age. One of the speakers, Jacquie
Lambert, who has worked most recently as a spiritual director, but also as a
critical care nurse, nursing lecturer, polytech chaplain, Benedictine oblate
and writer, told the seminar the church needed to listen to the darkest,
most forgotten corner of its membership, the fringe dwellers, because it was
in danger of losing them....
New diplomat keeps mum on controversial survey
The apostolic nuncio, Archbishop Charles Balvo, says he is unable to comment
on a reported Vatican move to screen prospective seminarians for homosexual
orientation. The publication of the document which purports to have all
seminarians checked to make sure they are not of homosexual orientation, has
stirred up controversy in the United States where all 229 seminaries are
being investigated...

Election 2005 - how has the common good fared?
The 2005 general election brought out a particular brand of focus on the
individual which Paul Green of the Palmerston North Justice and Peace
Commission found was endemic to the common good espoused in Catholic social
teaching. He looks here at the 'what's in it for me' syndrome....

Pope hails anti-Nazi bishop as courageous example for today
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/world/20051009-1024-vatican-nazicritic.html
Vatican City â€" A German bishop known as the "Lion of Muenster" for his
courageous anti-Nazi sermons during World War II took a step on the road to
sainthood when he was beatified Sunday in St. Peter's Basilica. Pope
Benedict XVI hailed the "heroic courage" of Clemens August von Galen and
described the churchman, who condemned anti-Semitism, as a model for those
in public roles Sunday. "This is precisely the ever-current message of
Blessed von Galen: faith is not reduced to a private sentiment, perhaps
something to hide when it becomes inconvenient, but implies coherence and
witness even in the public sphere in defense of man, of justice, of
truth..."
