The Great Conjunction, and why we celebrate Christmas on December 25
https://www.stuff.co.nz/science/300189535/the-great-conjunction-and-why-we-celebrate-christmas-on-december-25
[The article dicsusses the date of Jesus' birth, the fixing of
December 25 as Christmas Day and theories about the star of Bethlehem
from an astronomical point of view.]

National Portrait: Hirini Kaa, a Maori historian on life, death and religion
https://www.stuff.co.nz/pou-tiaki/123347885/national-portrait-hirini-kaa-a-mori-historian-on-life-death-and-religion
Religion is often sidelined in the New Zealand story, which ironically
paints Godzone as a largely secular land of enlightened progress, or a
social laboratory free of superstition. That's generally a Pakeha
story too. Hirini Kaa comes at the story from a different direction.

his memoir published. But at 93, the long-serving priest has become a
published author during the final throes of his life.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/manawatu-guardian/news/migrant-cindy-nguyen-overcomes-challenges-to-work-in-palmerston-north/ACJJZJQHYGL55ZU7BZIG2NWR5Q/
Cindy Nguyen is a dreamer. But she's not dreaming of owning a luxury
yacht, meeting a Hollywood superstar or winning Lotto. Her dreams are
what many New Zealanders take for granted - citizenship.

Survivors of abuse in care of the Catholic Church say their voices matter
https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/433489/survivors-of-abuse-in-care-of-the-catholic-church-say-their-voices-matter
Dr Christopher Longhurst, said it was of paramount importance that the
Catholic Church use the extent of its powers to look further and
deeper to discover where the abuse was still happening today, and make
the necessary recommendations to stop it.

Episode 157 — Commission, Coronavirus, Cardinal, Christmas Card
(December 15, 2020)
http://station15.co.nz/2020/12/station-xv-episode-157-commission-coronavirus-cardinal-christmas-card/

In a year when COVID-19 has dominated people's lives, it's fitting
that it features in the final episode of 2020. Pope Francis has warned
that the pandemic shouldn't be exploited for political point-scoring,
but the panel concludes that the horse might have bolted on that
front. The New Zealand Royal Commission into Abuse in Care has held
its first hearings into faith-based organisations, and it hasn't been
easy listening (or reading). Anna, Don, James and Gavin also discuss
the elevation of the first African-American to the College of
Cardinals and his take on the new US President, before they mull over
Pope Francis' planned trip to Iraq next year. Wishing all our
listeners a blessed and safe Christmas.

Bishop at centre of name debate investigated
An independent investigation led by a Christchurch firm is under way into the handling of sexual abuse complaints by a former Roman Catholic bishop of Dunedin. The Catholic Church has appointed an independent investigator to look at whether Bishop John Kavanagh took proper action when he received complaints of sexual abuse during his tenure, between 1957 and 1985.

Victims alarmed over legal bid to suppress names of faith-based abusers
Efforts by church organisations to temporarily keep the names of deceased perpetrators secret ahead of an Abuse in Care inquiry is hugely upsetting for survivors, an advocate for abuse survivors says ...

Catholic Church made 'no real attempt to investigate' sexual abuse complaint
An investigation has found the Catholic Church's handling of New Zealand historical sex abuse was plagued by failures, with a victim saying she was re-traumatised by the experience. Two Catholic Marist brothers, Kevin Healy and Michael Beaumont, have admitted to, and since been convicted of, abusing a girl in their care in Wairarapa in the 1970s. The investigation's findings, provided to Stuff by the victim, found when the woman, referred to "Mrs A", came forward to complain to the Catholic order in the early 2000s there was "no real attempt to investigate or look for corroborating evidence".

Brooklyn: Saoirse Ronan's heartwrenching romantic drama comes to Netflix
Finally a movie the Catholic Church will want you to see. The election of just the second Catholic president in US history hasn't been universally welcomed even within Catholic circles, while in New Zealand, the euthanasia referendum has certainly disturbed many Catholics. Two diverse but also highly disturbing events — the terrorist attack in Nice and the report on former cardinal Theodore McCarrick's inexplicable rise up the Church's ranks — also feature in this month's episode.
