LENT 2018

"Let us go together" - Ven. Suzanne Aubert

Each year the NZ Catholic Bishops' Lent Appeal is run by Caritas to support our work of charity and justice for the poorest and most vulnerable around the world, including in Aotearoa New Zealand.

In 2018 our Lenten theme is, 'Let us go together', which comes from Venerable Suzanne Aubert's 1885 book New and Complete Manual of Maori Conversation. We are personally called to go on a journey – with each other and with God. In the course of the journey we are changed and we change the world around us.

Resources and the Lenten Reflection Programmes are prepared each year for parishes, schools, small groups and the wider community and are available at http://www.caritas.org.nz/lent

Arrowtown's controversial 'Olive Leaf' building to be publicly notified (illustrations)
The olive leaf is a symbol of reconciliation, but a planned building inspired by its shape has divided opinion in the historic gold-mining town of Arrowtown. Queenstown architect Fred van Brandenburg first mooted the Olive Leaf – a multi-use parish centre situated beside the heritage-listed St Patrick's Catholic Church – in 2015.

CRUX - Edited by John L. Allen Jr. and Inés San Martin

Consensus on sexual morality eludes youth advising bishops
Some 300 young people from all over the world from different backgrounds and even different religions, gathered this week in Rome to provide advice to an upcoming summit of Catholic bishops on youth, have discussed a wide array of topics, and among other points plan to offer the bishops a frank admission that they simply couldn't reach consensus on hot-button issues of sexual morality...

'Lettergate' debacle unnecessary, but useful in surfacing tensions
Now that "Lettergate," the surreal affair regarding a letter from Pope emeritus Benedict XVI, has reached its denouement with the resignation of Monsignor Dario Viganò from the Vatican's Secretariat for Communications, it seems time to draw some big-picture conclusions...
