Sexual abuse survivor to visit Vatican
A Dunedin survivor of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church is heading to the Vatican in the hope of meeting the Pope, helped by the Catholic Bishop of Dunedin. Darryl Smith yesterday told ODT Insight he would fly to Rome in February to spend six days at the Vatican, coinciding with a gathering of the leaders of bishops' conferences from around the world.

Anniversary of architect's death commemorated
Australian choral and orchestral group Artes Christi performed in Dunedin yesterday to mark the anniversary of the death of one of New Zealand's great church architects. The Sydney-based ensemble performed at St Joseph's Cathedral, which was designed by Francis William Petre.

Episode 133 — Christ, Christmas; Jesus, Justice (December 17, 2018)

In our December episode, there's a little Christmas spirit, but there's a little bit of the Grinch as well. In New Zealand, new research has found that churches — Catholic and Protestant — aren't all that popular, but Jesus remains so. In the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte is trying to find out if suggesting people kill Catholic bishops is popular. But don't worry; it's just "hyperbole". On either side of the Tasman Sea, justice is being considered following an overturned conviction for an Australian Catholic bishop and in New Zealand on abortion laws. But, as Christmas approaches, shouldn't we all be worrying about whether Santa is real or not? Just another month — and another year — for The 15th Station.

** John Allen: A reality check on expectations for February child abuse summit
Under any circumstances, the announcement in September that Pope Francis plans to convene a summit Feb. 21-24 for all the presidents of bishops' conferences around the world, along with the Vatican's senior leadership, to discuss the clerical sexual abuse scandals in the Church would have been big news. After the Vatican invoked that summit in November in instructing the U.S. bishops to stand down in adopting new accountability measures, however, it was foreordained that American analysts will treat February like Roosevelt and Stalin at Yalta - a high-stakes, history-making exercise. Before expectations spiral completely out of control, however, it's important to say for all kinds of reasons, this is not going to be Yalta on sex abuse, and to hope that it will be is a fool's errand. After lobbying from the Catholic Church and others, the New Zealand Government's inquiry into child sexual abuse in institutions will include faith-based organisations. In the US, the Bishops have delayed implementing new abuse protocols after the Vatican asked them to wait until after the February gathering of presidents of bishops' conferences. Also in Rome, the Synod of Bishops on Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment concluded with calls for the Church to listen more carefully to youth and for young people to trust Church leaders — despite acknowledgements some leaders haven't always been worthy of that trust. Anna, Gavin and James also consider the case of a Melbourne mum in immigration detention that can't have her child baptised in a nearby church. In Florida, meanwhile, a church has been barred from serving as an election place in future after the pastor got a bit too political. All in a month's work for the 15th Station crew!

The threat of high winds prompted cancellation of the sixth annual South Dunedin Street Festival on Saturday, but support remains high for next year's event.
