STATION XV

Episode 133 — Christ, Christmas; Jesus, Justice (December 17, 2018)

In our December episode, there's a little Christmas spirit, but there's a little bit of the Grinch as well. In New Zealand, new research has found that churches — Catholic and Protestant — aren't all that popular, but Jesus remains so. In the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte is trying to find out if suggesting people kill Catholic bishops is popular. But don't worry; it's just "hyperbole". On either side of the Tasman Sea, justice is being considered following an overturned conviction for an Australian Catholic bishop and in New Zealand on abortion laws. But, as Christmas approaches, shouldn't we all be worrying about whether Santa is real or not? Just another month — and another year — for The 15th Station.

** Dutch Church is facing an uncertain future, but new bishop is up for his task
The cathedral in Roermond, in the Catholic southeast of the Netherlands, was filled to the last seat. More than twelve hundred people were there to see Harrie Smeets receive his episcopal consecration on Dec. 8. "The Church in all times, but especially in these times, should not let itself be put in a museum cabinet, as if it were a relic from a bygone era. Nor should the Church protect itself with bulletproof glass, being all too well pleased with herself. Instead, she should be out there in the world," the new bishop said ...

** John Allen: A reality check on expectations for February child abuse summit
Under any circumstances, the announcement in September that Pope Francis plans to convene a summit Feb. 21-24 for all the presidents of bishops' conferences around the world, along with the Vatican's senior leadership, to discuss the clerical sexual abuse scandals in the Church would have been big news. After the Vatican invoked that summit in November in instructing the U.S. bishops to stand down in adopting new accountability measures, however, it was foreordained that American analysts will treat February like Roosevelt and Stalin at Yalta - a high-stakes, history-making exercise. Before expectations spiral completely out of control, however, it's important to say for all kinds of reasons, this is not going to be Yalta on sex abuse, and to hope that it will be is a fool's errand. Let's lay out the reasons why, and then touch on what would actually count as success...

Why a 14th-century mystic appeals to today's 'spiritual but not religious' Americans

The history of organized religion is full of schisms, heresies and other breakaways. What is different at this time is a seemingly indiscriminate mixing of diverse religious traditions to form a personalized spirituality, often referred to as "cafeteria spirituality." At the heart of this trend is the general conviction that all world religions share a fundamental, common basis, a belief known as "perennialism." And this is where the unlikely figure of Meister Eckhart, a 14th-century Dominican friar, famous for his popular sermons on the direct experience of God, is finding popular appeal...

STATION XV

Episode 132 — Investigation, Implementation, Immigration and Invocation (November 16 2018)

After lobbying from the Catholic Church and others, the New Zealand Government's inquiry into child sexual abuse in institutions will include faith-based organisations. In the US, the Bishops have delayed implementing new abuse protocols after the Vatican asked them to wait until after the February gathering of presidents of bishops' conferences. Also in Rome, the Synod of Bishops on Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment concluded with calls for the Church to listen more carefully to youth and for young people to trust Church leaders — despite acknowledgements some leaders haven't always been worthy of that trust. Anna, Gavin and James also consider the case of a Melbourne mum in immigration detention that can't have her child baptised in a nearby church. In Florida, meanwhile, a church has been barred from serving as an election place in future after the pastor got a bit too political. All in a month's work for the 15th Station crew!

FROM THE SECULAR PRESS

National Portrait: Dame Claudia Orange, Treaty witness
In 1952 the people of Ngati Whatua were forcibly evicted from their settlement in Okahu Bay, near Auckland's Bastion Point.
Those who resisted till the end were physically carried from their dwellings, their village burnt to the ground. Dame Claudia Orange, just 14 at the time, was a witness to these events brought on by the Crown. The experience was another weave in a thread of Te Ao Maori that has run through Orange's life...

The threat of high winds prompted cancellation of the sixth annual South Dunedin Street Festival on Saturday, but support remains high for next year's event. Pakistani Christians, an embattled minority
The uproar surrounding Asia Bibi - a Pakistani Christian woman who was acquitted of blasphemy charges and released from death row but remains at a secret location for her protection - has drawn attention to the plight of the country's Christians. The minority, among Pakistan's poorest, has faced an increasingly intolerant atmosphere in this Muslim-majority nation where radical religious and sectarian groups have become more prominent in recent years...

Is China's targeting of Catholics pushback from low-level party officials?
Although China and the Vatican signed a provisional agreement on the appointment of bishops in September, persecution of Chinese Catholics continues. Some believe there is considerable pushback against the Vatican-China deal from inside China's United Front Work Department, the Communist Party-controlled religious bureaucracy, especially at a more localized level...
