The Catholic parish of Thames was founded on October 18, 1867, by Father Nivard Jourdan at the behest of Bishop Pompallier. Father Jourdan established two schools to serve Catholics drawn to the Thames goldfield and these were run by the Sisters of Mercy from 1874.

Representatives from the Catholic aid agency Caritas gathered in Wellington to share stories of how climate change affected their countries, describing themselves as the canaries in the coal mine.

According to a young American who participated in a meeting earlier this year in Rome ahead of the Oct. 3-28 Synod of Bishops, the gathering is a chance to confront the clerical sexual abuse crisis "head-on" but also to show that the Church is more than that.
