its hardline stance on divorcees - something he began lobbying for
almost a decade ago. Archbishop John Dew is among bishops worldwide
pushing for a liberal reform of church rules which ban Catholics who
divorce, then remarry, from taking Communion - effectively excluding
them from church life.

It's 70 years since John Roy-Wojciechowski started his new life in New
Zealand. The Howick resident was one of 733 Polish refugee children
who settled in Pahiatua in 1944 after his family was forced to flee a
Russian invasion.

St Mary's parish celebrates 150 years

The first Roman Catholic Mass celebrated in Southland was said by a
French Marist missionary priest who had walked down from Dunedin.
There were no roads or maps, just plenty of bush and swamp. Mass was
offered in a one-room post office. By contrast, yesterday's
sesquicentennial Mass drew 650 people to the Ascot Park hotel, to the
vast space in which they'd enjoyed a banquet the night before.

For the second time in little over a week, Forsyth Barr Stadium in
Dunedin has been transformed into a House of God. Hundreds of people
attended a Catholic Mass yesterday to celebrate Kavanagh College's
25th jubilee, taking communion at the ''zoo'' end of the pitch,
typically where rugby players dot down to score.

Recently the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis will travel to Turkey
Nov. 28-30, the official purpose for which is largely ecumenical.
He'll visit Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople on the feast of
St. Andrew, considered their patron in much the same way Catholics
regard St. Peter as the first pope. But what's not yet clear is how
much of a push Francis will make on another front: An increasingly
virulent anti-Christian climate in Turkey, which tends to simmer
constantly until it boils over into lethal violence.
