The Catholic community are not happy with new laws giving councils the
power to decide whether shops can be open on Easter Sunday. A new bill
passed its first reading on Tuesday night, which would enable local
authorities to choose whether or not to allow trading on the religious
holiday in a bid to let communities decide in different parts of the
country.

The Maori Party has renewed its call for 5 November to be recognised
as Parihaka Day to commemorate the sacking of the pacifist settlement
in Taranaki by government troops and militia in 1881. Caritas, the
Catholic Church's agency for justice, peace and development has also
been exploring the idea of Parihaka Day with the settlement.

A woman accused of burning down a church has thanked the judge after
her charge was dismissed. Yesterday, Judge Max Courtney ruled there

History is on the move with an 80-year-old Northland church inching
its way to a new home on Waiheke Island. The long-disused Catholic
church, across the road from the Towai Tavern on State Highway 1 south
of Kawakawa, was cut into three pieces on Monday and loaded onto a
truck for the long journey to Kawakawa Bay, southeast of Auckland.
