CHRISTCHURCH MOSQUE KILLINGS

"Our thoughts and our prayers are with those who have been impacted today. Christchurch was their home. For many, this may not have been the place they were born, in fact for many, New Zealand was their choice. The place they actively came to, and committed to. The place they were raising their families. Where they were parts of communities that they loved and who loved them in return. It was a place that many came to for its safety. A place where they were free to practice their culture and their religion..."

"We, New Zealand, were not a target because we are a safe harbour for those who hate, because we condone racism, because we are an enclave for extremism. We were chosen for the very fact that we are none of those things. Because we represent diversity, kindness, compassion. A home for those who share our values. Refuge for those who need it. And those values will not and cannot be shaken by this attack." - Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, 15 March 2019.

LENT 2019

The Caritas Lenten Reflection Programme

Each year the Lent Appeal is run by Caritas on behalf of New Zealand's Catholic Bishops to support its work of charity and justice for the poorest and most vulnerable around the world, including in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Lent 2019 theme – "Living Our Lives with Love" – is taken from "Gaudete et Exsultate – Rejoice and Exult" by Pope Francis. The key themes are new beginnings, patience, compassion, mercy and love.

Resources and the Lenten Reflection Programmes are prepared each year for parishes, schools, small groups and the wider community. Links to the resources are available on the linked page.

The following article by Anna Rawhit-Connell describes a Church which may seem alien to devout followers of Jesus Christ in the Catholic tradition, but it does give an insight into how some people see us "from the outside".  If the article makes bitter reading, I recommend as an antidote the obituary of Sister Marie Fitzpatrick in this News & Notes. Sister Marie, too, is the Church - Mike Leon.

Shedding my Catholic guilt
Anna Rawhiti-Connell grapples to reconcile her history as part of a church which offered ritual and comfort, but is currently cloaked in guilt

STATION XV

Episode 136 — Sentence, Summit, Sacrifice and Signature (March 15, 2019)

The conviction and sentencing of Australian Cardinal George Pell dominates this month's episode, with Anna, Don, James and Gavin grappling with the complexities of the case and a range of emotions. The show also looks at the Vatican summit on child protection and the Pope's Lenten message for 2019. The panel considers the dearth of "local" vocations to the priesthood in New Zealand and wonders what to make of Donald Trump signing Bibles in Alabama. Spanning the globe and a broad range of topics on this month's 15th Station.

John L. Allen Jr: Will Pell be abuse crisis's Eichmann, Count of Monte Cristo or Rosenbergs?

While many uncertainties remain about the Pell case, at the level of public perceptions perhaps the greatest is this: Is the 77-year-old prelate destined to become the Adolf Eichmann, the Count of Monte Cristo, or the Rosenbergs of the clerical abuse scandals? ...
