BIOETHICS COUNCIL REPORT

Parents should not be able to order child - church
http://nz.news.yahoo.com/080619/3/67wp.html
Parenthood is about welcoming the children you are given rather than
"ordering" them to specifications, the New Zealand Catholic Bioethics Centre
says. A Bioethics Council report -- titled Who Gets Born? -- was presented
to the Government today and says the sex of embryos created outside the
mother's body, under programmes such as IVF (in vitro fertilisation), should
be chosen by parents, allowing them to gender-balance their families...

has recommended a more liberal regime for pre-birth testing. After 26
minutes the discussion is joined by Wendy Wicks, national policy researcher
for the Defence of People with Disability, and John Kleinsman of the NZ
Catholic Bioethics Centre.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

http://ncrcafe.org/node/507

"Three things to understand about the Legionaries of Christ"
Last week I published a lengthy, and remarkably candid, interview with
Archbishop Edwin O’Brien of Baltimore about a set of directives he’s issued
for the Legionaries of Christ and their lay movement, Regnum Christi.
Specifically, O’Brien demanded an accounting of all personnel and activities
in his archdiocese from both groups, and he barred Legionaries and Regnum
Christi members from one-on-one spiritual counseling with anyone under 18...

Also:
The 'browning' of Catholicism and the value of Catholic schools
Two experts in religious sociology addressed the U.S. bishops this
afternoon, each in a way making a simple point. They might be summarized as
follows:
• Christianity in America is being “de-Europeanized through immigration,
especially among Hispanics and Asians, with the Catholic church looming as a
bellwether of demographic transformations that will eventually engulf other
churches and the entire society;
• Practice of the sacraments is declining across generations, but enrollment
in Catholic schools remains a powerful way of boosting the likelihood that a
given Catholic will have an active sacramental life.
