New catholic bishop reconsiders Christchurch cathedral restoration (photos)
Canterbury's new catholic bishop is reconsidering restoration of the earthquake-damaged Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Paul Martin, who was ordained as the new bishop in March, is exploring other options, including building a new catholic cathedral on a more central Christchurch site. He plans to ask architects to draw up concepts for what a new cathedral might look like on a $40m budget.

Church abuse victims resigned to being left out of inquiry
Church abuse survivors have resigned themselves to being excluded from the upcoming Royal Commission of Inquiry. The public consultation period about how the inquiry should run wrapped up a week ago and its chair Sir Anand Satyanand has begun going through the 300 submissions.

Christian persecution urgently calls churches to seek unity, pope says
Seeking Christian unity is more urgent than ever because of the ongoing persecution of Christians, Pope Francis told an Orthodox leader. Meeting with Metropolitan Rastislav, primate of the Orthodox Church in the Czech and Slovak Republics, the pope said the "suffering of many brothers and sisters persecuted because of the Gospel urgently calls us to act in seeking greater unity."
