For a group of Catholic nuns, Wednesday was a reason for a double celebration – it marked 150 years since their order, Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions was founded and it was Assumption Day.

Island Bay childcare centre forced to close (photo)
An Island Bay childcare centre is being forced to close because the religious order that owns it cannot afford to replace its asbestos roof. The roof of Wellington's Aubert Childcare Centre, owned by the Sisters of Compassion, was sealed as soon as the asbestos was discovered a couple of months ago. Now the Order has been told a permanent replacement would cost up to $300,000.

As we mark the Feast of the Assumption, the patronal feast of New Zealand, The 15th Station celebrates our fifth birthday with a typically full show. Dunedin Bishop Colin Campbell's strong letter denouncing the proposed opening of an abortion clinic leads the show, but other heavy issues like the Egyptian election, same-sex legislation in New Zealand and the mass shootings at a Sikh temple and a Colorado movie theatre. A big thank you to all our listeners over the past five years, during which time tens of thousands of shows have been downloaded. The show will go on

Most people believe the real power in Catholicism resides with the hierarchy, and in terms of both theology and church law, that's basically right. For instance, canon law says the pope wields "supreme, full, immediate and universal" authority, and it's tough to get more sweeping than that. One wonders, however, if an accountant would reach the same conclusion...
