Hermann Curry was a year away from semi-retirement in Samoa when he met his unfortunate death in a Lower Hutt bus depot. He was buried on Monday in the blue blazer he treasured as an old boy of Chanel College in Apia. The foundation pupil of the college, opened in 1962, had planned to attend its 50th anniversary celebrations on the return home...

Benjamin Revell was a brave sailor who fell not in action but to a deadly illness. Today admirals, commanders, captains, a cabinet minister and, most importantly, his wife and daughter, who he battled so hard for, united to farewell him. A Catholic requiem mass merged with Samoan singing and the muffled drums, the uniforms and brass of the navy to farewell a man described by friend Tom Swingler as "a gentle giant (who) came and saw and conquered our hearts".

When historian Michael King began researching the history of his greatuncle Maurice Belgrave, he discovered this Frankton draper had a momentous secret – he was born an Orthodox Jew under another name. His New Zealand relatives had always believed him to be Catholic, not realising he had been baptised just three days before his wedding to devout Catholic Margaret Hartnett, in October 1911.

Catholics to take time over cathedral decision (photo)

Shunned from the centre of the Anglican settlement to a site near the railway line and close to the old gasworks, the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament has still managed to wow visitors and locals alike, providing a spectacle more exotic than the somewhat austere but unsurprisingly better placed Anglican Christ Church Cathedral. Ironic then that as a result of extensive earthquake damage, the fabric of the Catholic cathedral is finding a new home in another industrial part of the city.

St Mary's to be assessed

It will be June before a detailed engineering assessment of the earthquake risk at St Mary's Catholic Church in Blenheim can be done, Wellington archdiocese property general manager Paul Bayliss says.

Many Catholic buildings deemed unsafe

With bad news sweeping across the Catholic diocese regarding the future of its buildings, Kaikoura priest Father Eric Urlich says the church community here is very fortunate. Kaikoura's Sacred Heart church, on Ludstone Rd, received a clean bill of health from building inspectors. But all was not well for many in the Marlborough region.

Thomas de Wesselow is a British Art historian and investigator of Medieval images. He has new research on the Shroud of Turin which for centuries has been regarded by some as the burial cloth of Jesus – by others, as the most elaborate hoax in history. After five years of painstaking study, Thomas reveals the results of his research in his book, The Sign. He believes he can prove beyond doubt that the Shroud is an authentic relic of Jesus and, that it inspired the belief in the Resurrection.

May 8, 2012: With Newt Gingrich dropping out of the Republican presidential race, it's essentially become a head-to-head battle between President Barack Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney with six months to go until the general election. And it continues to be a rough period for President Obama, with a new campaign ad being widely criticised, ex-girlfriends revealing some of the secrets of their relationships with the future president and letters from Osama bin Laden being released. Brendan, Tim and Gavin chat about those stories, plus the other talking points of the past couple of weeks.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

A poll average from Rome on the next pope
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/poll-average-rome-next-pope

Right now, the "next pope" conversation isn't creating much buzz. There's no sign of a health crisis around Benedict XVI, and Catholic attention around the world is focused on more local matters: the LCWR crackdown in the States, the disciplining of liberal priests and calls for Cardinal Sean Brady to resign over the sex abuse crisis in Ireland, a political scandal involving Communion and Liberation in Italy, and so on. Yet with an 85-year-old pope beginning to show his age, speculation about who might come next is always in the background, even if it's on a low boil...
