LENT 2010

Caritas Aotearoa NZ - http://www.caritas.org.nz

Lent: "Working together in true communion".

"The development of peoples depends, above all, on a recognition that the human race is a single family working together in true communion, not simply a group of subjects who happen to live side by side." - Pope Benedict XVI: 'Caritas in Veritate', 2009.

As we begin Lent, the reflection above reminds us of our common humanity and calling - and provides the inspiration for our Lenten theme "working together in true communion". The Lent Appeal is Caritas' main appeal of the year. Resources have been sent to schools and parishes.

Our schools' resource features the popular Lent Lifestyle Calendar and a songwriting competition. Our popular Reflection Programme is available in English, Samoan and Tongan. There is also additional scripture reflection and a Way of the Cross meditation. Find out more at http://www.caritas.org.nz

Schoolwork comes naturally to Paul Harris but he still got a shock when he received his exam results. The Mangere teenager came top in New Zealand in A level further maths in the Cambridge international examinations. He was also awarded two New Zealand Qualifications Authority outstanding scholarships in physics and maths with calculus and a scholarship in statistics and modelling. To top that off Paul was dux of St Peter's College last year.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen, Jr.

Like him or not, Denver's Chaput is a very 21st century bishop

Bill Veeck, the P.T. Barnum of sports franchise owners, once said there are only two seasons -- winter and baseball. I'm a convinced Veeckian on that score, so I tend to seek diversions to occupy the long emptiness until Opening Day. One thought exercise I've come up with is this: Sit down and try to compile a list of the ten most consequential Catholic bishops in America. By that, I don't mean the bishops you like most or agree with, but those who seem to have the most impact...
