Nun on her way to becoming first Kiwi saint (photo; video)
A nineteenth century New Zealand nun is a step closer to becoming recognised as this country's first catholic saint. The case for elevating Suzanne Aubert, founder of the Sisters of Compassion, is being backed by an Australian who helped push for that country's first saint.

Ex-mayoral candidate killed by train (photo)
A former Christchurch mayoral candidate died after he was hit by a passenger train in Masterton last week. Kieran Patrick Gallagher-Power, 25, was struck near the Solway railway crossing about 10.40am last Wednesday.

Joint-cathedral plan denied
An Anglican leader has rubbished reports that closed-door discussions on a combined Anglican-Catholic cathedral for Christchurch are under way.

Editorial: Reunion unlikely
The idea that the destruction of the cathedrals of both the Anglican and Catholic churches by the earthquakes in Christchurch might provide an opportunity to unite those churches again after nearly 500 years of schism is an intriguing one.

Partnership between two Christian denominations is possible
Monday's NCR Morning Briefing included two short articles exploring the possibility of building a joint Catholic and Anglican cathedral in Christchurch, New Zealand, after the devastations of February 2011's earthquake. Not surprisingly, some think the idea is impractical. Others see it as an exciting possibility for ecumenical cooperation. I know it is possible, for I grew up attending a Catholic parish that shared a worship space with Anglicans...

Station XV: Episode 60, September 15, 2012 — A cathedral, a proposal and a Martini
Same-sex marriage continues to dominate Catholic discussion in New Zealand and leads this month's episode of The 15th Station. With our studio out of action, James and Gavin talk across the oceans about that story, including a sporting analogy that was devised to demonstrate how redefining words is a dangerous precedent. The guys also talk about the tributes for Cardinal Carlo Martini, the possibility of a joint Anglican-Catholic cathedral in Christchurch and the place of Catholicism in the upcoming US election. They end with the story that went around the world — the fresco fiasco. Thanks for listening and we'd love to get your feedback.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

In Lebanon, pope mixes bitter and sweet

In advance, Benedict XVI's three-day trip to Lebanon shaped up as a balancing act, both reaching out and pushing back -- that is, extending an olive branch to the Muslim majority of both Lebanon and the entire Middle East, while at the same time defending its beleaguered Christian minority and rejecting the radical currents in Islam which exploded anew this week with violence in Egypt, Libya and elsewhere. Day one of the trip didn't disappoint, with Benedict offering a mixture of the bitter and the sweet ...
