St Joseph's significant male teacher roll bucks the trend

A New Plymouth primary school is bucking the national trend by having almost
as many male teachers as female ones. When principal Mike Dowd started at St
Joseph's Catholic School at the end of last year, the caretaker was the only
other man on the staff. Since then, three male teachers and a teacher-aide
have joined the ranks...

The Vatican's changing relationship with Europe
Last Friday, I was in Washington, for a symposium on "Religion and Public
Life in Europe" sponsored by the National Intelligence Council. The event
brought together a number of prominent academic and policy analysts -- plus
one plebian journalist -- to ponder religious trends in Europe and what they
might mean for trans-Atlantic relationships. In order to promote free
discussion, the event was off-the-record. I don't think it violates
anybody's trust, however, for me to share what I said, since that part
belongs to me. I was asked to talk about thinking in the Vatican these days
on Europe, and where things might be heading...
