NZ CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

A stronger commitment needed to measuring children's wellbeing (10 Apr 2013)

New Zealand needs a greater commitment to measuring the wellbeing of our country's children, say New Zealand's Catholic Bishops. Responding to the release of the UNICEF Innocenti report into Child well-being in rich countries, Archbishop John Dew, speaking on behalf of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference, said it was a matter of concern that New Zealand does not collect enough relevant data to be included in the ranking tables...

Prayer vigil (full text)
The prayer vigil for marriage, which was to be held in Seymour Square on Sunday, will now be held at St Mary's Catholic Church. The hour-long non-denominational vigil will allow people who oppose changes to the current legislation on same-sex marriage a time of prayer and reflection. The organiser, the Rev Brendan O'Hagan of the Wairau Presbyterian Parish, emphasises it is not a protest, or public demonstration. "It is a peaceful prayer vigil in celebration of the sanctity of marriage between man and woman," the Rev O'Hagan said. People who share these views are invited to attend the service which begins on Sunday at 2pm.

Public appeal mooted for St Gerard's (photo)
A public appeal may be launched this year to raise money to strengthen one of Wellington's best-known landmarks - St Gerard's monastery and church. The heritage-listed Gothic-style red-brick complex on the lower slopes of Mt Victoria has been assessed as earthquake-prone.

Interest keen in church offering at Rototuna (photo)
A call for tenders for a six-hectare slice of undeveloped residential-zoned property in Rototuna is generating massive interest for the seller, the Catholic church. The former farm land at 200 Kay Road was bought 10 years ago by the Catholic Diocese of Hamilton, with plans to develop it into a new parish and school.

Are Kiwis Godless?
In two-and-a-half years here in the US, it has been always apparent to me that New Zealand and America have vastly different religious cultures. To illustrate this, let me begin by asking you a question. Does John Key believe in God? ...

Clock caretaker Robin Galbraith
For more than 130 years, the clock high on the steeple of St Joseph's Church has kept time for the people of Temuka. The clock keeps on ticking thanks to generations of caretakers, among whom is Robin Galbraith, who has looked after the clock for 45 years.

Wayne Brittenden's Counterpoint
Wayne Brittenden has been Radio New Zealand's correspondent in several capital cities over the years. Each week he gives fresh insights into a wide variety of topics of national and international concern, followed by Chris Laidlaw's discussion of the issue with guests. Today, Pope Francis' Easter denunciation of uncaring capitalism - a theme also taken up by his predecessor - reflects historic cultural differences between Catholic and Protestant attitudes towards work and money. Wayne looks at this fascinating but little-discussed aspect of religion, and Chris follows up with Auckland University's Professor of Social Anthropology, Cris Shore.

Radio New Zealand. Spiritual Outlook. 31 March 2013
One of New Zealand's most senior Anglican ministers is taking on a high profile international role. Archbishop David Moxon is heading to Rome as the Anglican Communion's chief representative to the Roman Catholic Church. He will step down in April as the Archbishop of the New Zealand dioceses, and thus as one of the three leaders of the Anglican Church in New Zealand. He will also relinquish the role of Bishop of Waikato, a position he has held for two decades.
In Spiritual Outlook this week, Archbishop Moxon sits down with spoken features producer Lisa Thompson to discuss what his new role will entail.

Hard questions about Francis in Argentina and a lesson from Chile
I spent early April in Buenos Aires, where I tried to learn more about Pope Francis from those who know him best as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio. The idea was to gain insight into the man and his vision of the church, and I published some of what I found along the way. However, I also had to look into some hard questions about the new pope's record in Argentina...
