Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving in preparation for Easter. In 2013 it began on Ash Wednesday 13 February and continues to Easter. 

The theme for the Bishops' Lent Appeal 2013, taken from a Papal letter to the Church in the Pacific, is: Follow faithfully the way, Tell courageously the truth, Live joyfully the life. Kia pono te whai atu i te huarahi, Kia maia te whakapuaki i te pono, Kia harikoa te manawa i te oranga. 

The Lent Appeal is run by Caritas on behalf of New Zealand's Catholic Bishops to support its work of charity and justice for the world's poorest – in New Zealand and overseas.

Resources - available at http://www.caritas.org.nz/resources/lent - have been prepared for parishes, schools, small groups and the wider community. Olivina Tu'iono from Caritas Tonga is also visiting schools and parishes throughout New Zealand from 9 February-10 March to share her experience working with poor and marginalised people in Tonga.

Hotere remembered as 'the man' (photo)
Around 600 gathered at St Joseph's Cathedral for the Dunedin funeral of celebrated artist Ralph Hotere.

Dunedin has been the home for decades to a great New Zealand artist, Hone Papita Raukura ''Ralph'' Hotere. He was a towering figure, among the top of the ''A list'' of this nation's painters. His place in the pantheon was recognised last year when he was made a member of the Order of New Zealand (ONZ), an honour limited to just 20 living New Zealanders. It is intriguing to ponder why someone from a tiny settlement near Hokianga, Northland, with his Maori and Catholic upbringing and from a family of 15, should find a place in Dunedin. But that is what he did.

Churches resist accommodation perk tax
Church leaders in Southland and across the country are riled at a Government decision to increase the accommodation tax on clergy, many of whom they say are already under financial strain.

It is the brightest lights which burn the fastest, and veteran broadcaster Phillip Leishman lead a life packed to the hilt before being taken far too young, family said at his funeral. Described in eulogies as "an inspiration" and "a true gentleman" he was farewelled at St Patrick's Cathedral in Auckland yesterday.

Timaru friends and family of broadcaster Phillip Leishman have remembered a ''warm and caring man''.
Mr Leishman, who grew up in Timaru and attended St Patrick's High School – now Roncalli College – died overnight on Monday after battling an aggressive form of cancer.

A disgraced Catholic priest jailed for slotting $150,000 of parish cash into pokie machines could still work for the church once released from prison. Father John Fitzmaurice, 57, was a trusted administrator and clergyman at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament and Addington's Sacred Heart Parish in Christchurch for 34 years.
