Some charities sitting on a heap of assets

Many charities are amassing wealth rather than using it to further their charitable ends, says a charities sector researcher. Independent researcher Dr Michael Gousmett, also chief executive of the St Vincent de Paul Society in New Zealand, said an analysis of the financial position of the top 10 charities ranked by assets and excluding universities reveals they hold $1.8 billion in investments, or 39% of their total assets of $4.5 billion.

St Luke’s Catholic community in Flat Bush needs a new church. At present the weekly Sunday Eucharist is held in the Sancta Maria College auditorium while other church services are held in the chapel. The number of parishioners has been growing since they started five years ago and they now have more than 600 every Sunday. They are hosting a choral concert at the college gymnasium at 7pm on May 6 to fundraise for the new church. Tickets at $10 are available from Nanette Ferian on 269-7055.

An empty classroom at Hamilton East's Marian Catholic School received minor damage yesterday after a fire started in a fluorescent lightbulb. Fire safety officer Kevin Holmes said the block of classrooms was evacuated about midday. The room was not in use at the time.
