Six decades a priest, and Monsignor Thomas Power never regretted one of them. The 92 year-old remained active almost until his death last month. He was thought to be New Zealand's oldest Catholic parish priest. But his ministry in the Diocese of Christchurch was notable for more than longevity.

When one hears of a street in southern Tawa called Redwood Ave, it is easy to conclude that it is named after one of the largest and tallest trees in the world. However, that is not the case ... the land was sold to the Tawa Development Corporation on the condition that the subdivision was named "Redwood" after the long-serving Archbishop of Wellington, Francis William Redwood.

But son John Green said his father never lost touch with his roots. "He used to give money quietly away ... Timoti te Heuheu was farewelled on Monday at Waihi Marae on the shores of Lake Taupo. He was the husband of former National Cabinet minister Georgina te Heuheu. The Catholic Bishop of Hamilton, Denis Browne, officiated at the 90-minute funeral ceremony.

Pine trees get the heave-ho
One year after council staff warned chainsaw happy people to heed council procedure, the line of pine trees at the cemetery is being removed, but this time it is official, says Mayor Winston Gray. The Catholic Church has burial sites closest to the work and the church gave the OK before the felling commenced.

On June 22, previewing an evaluation of the Vatican's financial transparency by Moneyval, the Council of Europe's anti-money laundering body, I wrote: "The report is probably destined to trigger confusing and conflicting headlines about how well the Vatican did."
