Br Graeme Donaldson (86) will today mark his milestone with a Mass of Thanksgiving at St Patrick's's Basilica in South Dunedin, attended by the Catholic Bishop of Dunedin, the Most Rev Michael Dooley.

Catholic Church called on to apologise for colonial land confiscations
https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/407887/catholic-church-called-on-to-apologise-for-colonial-land-confiscations
The New Zealand Maori Council is calling on the Catholic Church to apologise for its role in the confiscation of Maori land and colonisation. Central to the issue is what's known as the Doctrine of Discovery - borne out a number of Catholic laws (called 'papal bulls') under Pope Alexander the Sixth's reign in the 15th century. It was used internationally as justification for Christians to claim land belonging to non-Christians.

'Debt is the slavery of the free', Gisborne nuns tell Parliament
https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/118890144/debt-is-the-slavery-of-the-free-gisborne-nuns-tell-parliament
"Debt is the Slavery of the Free" nuns told MPs preparing laws to reign in the predatory behaviour of lenders. The "radical nuns from Gisborne" from the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart may not sound like they have anything to say to you about your financial situation. These are nuns who have first-hand knowledge of the horrors of debt slavery and impoverishment experienced in modern New Zealand through volunteering in budgeting agencies...

You don't have to take a solemn vow to stay the night in one of Te Aroha's nunnery chambers- just wipe your feet at the door. The town's convent has been converted into guest accommodation for holidaymakers wanting to have a restful and reflective visit in Te Aroha. Previously named the Convent of Mercy, The Nunnery sits behind the Saint Joseph's Catholic Church and St Joseph's School on the corner of Koromiko St and Burgess St.

'Word of God' Sunday a chance to strengthen Catholics' scripture understanding, scholars say
https://cruxnow.com/church-in-the-usa/2020/01/word-of-god-sunday-a-chance-to-strengthen-catholics-scripture-understanding-scholars-say/
