The head of Australia's largest network of non-government health services will this week call on the Pacific Islands Forum to work on an international basis to address the major factors that contribute to people's prospects of a healthy life. Martin Laverty, the chief executive of Catholic Health Australia, which has 75 hospitals and 550 aged care service providers in its network, will make the call on Friday at the New Zealand Bioethics Conference hosted by the University of Otago.

We already knew that Italian Archbishop Carlo Maria ViganĂ², named by Pope Benedict XVI in October as his new nuncio, or ambassador, to the United States, seriously rocked the boat in his brief but tumultuous run as the No. 2 official in the government of the Vatican city-state from 2009 to 2011. What we didn't know until this week, however, was just how vigorously ViganĂ² had campaigned to be allowed to finish the financial house-cleaning he started. As it turns out, the pope's new man in Washington is something of a whistle-blower...
