In 1952 the people of Ngati Whatua were forcibly evicted from their settlement in Okahu Bay, near Auckland's Bastion Point.
Those who resisted till the end were physically carried from their dwellings, their village burnt to the ground. Dame Claudia Orange, just 14 at the time, was a witness to these events brought on by the Crown. The experience was another weave in a thread of Te Ao Maori that has run through Orange's life...

Wellington priest who removed sexual abuse protest ribbons has change of heart 
 A Wellington priest who took down ribbons tied to the gates of his church by child sexual abuse survivors has had a change of heart. The ribbons were tied to the gates of the St Mary of the Angels Catholic church in Boulcott St on Thursday to acknowledge historic sexual abuse of children in the Wellington Diocese.

Wind threat cancels event but support high
The threat of high winds prompted cancellation of the sixth annual South Dunedin Street Festival on Saturday, but support remains high for next year's event. Yesterday, St Patrick's Community Centre in South Dunedin transformed its Mercy Room into a pop-up restaurant, and would-be patrons queued out the door to sample the Syrian food.
