As Cardinal John Dew shuts the doors of St Gerard's church for the
last time, a hush falls over the congregation. Soft piano notes
reverberate up to the criss-crossed rafters. It was a solemn way to
conclude the final mass held in the peach-coloured building which,
nestled on a hill in Mt Victoria, has been a landmark in Wellington's
skyline for the past 113 years.

The cultural diversity of St Joseph's School was celebrated yesterday.
The full Oamaru primary school held a special Mass at St Patrick's
Basilica to welcome 23 new pupils, and their families, to the school

Rio Tinto is facing criticism after giving plastic-filled goodie bags
to school pupils.
The company, which owns the Tiwai Point aluminum smelter, last week
donated plastic drawstring bags to Bluff School pupils which contained
plastic drink bottles, plastic straws, lollipops and balloons. Bluff
is also home to Catholic school St Teresa's, but teacher Rosi Coyle
said her pupils were not offered anything.

Molly O'Dwyer was visiting the Wairarapa town's ageing municipal pool
this summer when she noticed few young swimmers choosing to use the
slide. To prove it was a concern for youngsters in the area, Molly
spoke to her fellow pupils at St Mary's Catholic School and created a
petition signed by her peers, teachers, whanau, and school staff.
