Radio NZ. Protesters call for release of Iranian (full text)
A protest has been held outside Auckland's Mt Eden Prison calling for the
release of an Iranian detained there. Members of the Global Peace and
Justice group are showing their support for Amir Mohebbi, who they say is
refusing to return to Iran because he would not be safe as a Catholic
convert. Spokesperson John Minto says Mr Mohebbi has been in prison for
three and a half years. Police say there were about 30 protesters, and no
one was arrested.

A 14-verse hymn, "Mo Maria", written by a bishop in 1842 and sung by Maori
since, was the inspiration for hand-woven books by Whanganui printers Marty
and Marilyn Vreede. Eleven hand-bound editions were the first works in 60
years to be printed on the Gaveaux press, which was brought to New Zealand
in 1840 by Bishop Jean-Baptiste Pompallier...

Religion education debate : Major questions go unanswered
http://www.spcm.org/Journal/spip.php?breve835
Auckland NZ â€" While diversity and inclusiveness may be the desired outcome,
recent discussion on religion in schools is shaping up to produce
dissention, marginalising and possibly forced solutions. About 150 people
attended the New Zealand Diversity Forum interfaith discussion on religion
in schools, held at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Auckland last Monday. This was

Badge of dishonour: French rugby's shameful secret
http://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article2936693.ece
[On the eve of the Rugby World Cup, this article recounts the chequered
history of rugby in France, where - in the homeland of the Marist
Brothers! - the game was frowned on by the Church as barely-controlled
savagery. The political and social background to the religious controversy
is explained by Abbé Michel Devert, who founded the chapel of Notre Dame du
Rugby. This link: http://tinyurl.com/3bmyzn opens an automatic English
translation of the chapel's Web page, with a fine image of the world's only
stained glass window showing a rugby scrum!

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

http://ncrcafe.org/node/507

Looking for signs of a 'great awakening' in Austria
Pope Benedict XVI grew up in Bavaria, just across the Salzach River from
Austria. In his 1997 memoirs Milestones, Joseph Ratzinger wistfully
describes joining his family for Sunday walks across a local bridge into
Salzburg, falling under the spell of Austrian culture and music. Msgr. Georg
Ratzinger, the pope's brother, recently confessed that "both of us are
Austria-lovers" ...
