John MacManus was a founding member of the Spirit Army, a volunteer group started to fight poverty in Invercargill, one family at a time. The group got started when Gerry Forde, who along with John is a parishioner at St Patrick's Church (Invercargill), heard from the St Patrick's School principal that a number of school families were struggling. So Forde called a meeting at the parish, 35 people turned up, and the Spirit Army was formed.

A Catholic Oamaru secondary school has new owners, which its acting principal says is a "symbolic" handover that will have virtually no impact on how it is run. Ownership of St Kevin's College, which had been run by the Christian Brothers since 1927, was transferred to the Catholic Diocese of Dunedin at a special ceremony at the school's chapel recently.
