Former mayor dies

John Casey, 81, the first Southland district mayor, died this week. Mr Casey became a councillor on the Southland County Council in 1974 and mayor in 1986 for the last term of the county council. He was then the first Southland District mayor, from 1989-1992. "He was a well respected mayor, full of integrity and always had the best interests of Southland in mind," current Southland Mayor Frana Cardno said. A vigil service was held last night and there will be a requiem mass today at St Theresa's Catholic Church at 11am.
