Catholic church knew of previous complaint against teen-grooming priest
The Tongan church gave Sosefo Sateki Raass Raass a good character reference before he moved to Auckland, where he was convicted in 2019 of indecent communication with a person under 16 and subsequently quit the priesthood. But a complaint had been lodged about Raass in 2006, and the head of the Tongan church, Cardinal Soane Patita Paini Mafi, admitted there were repeated rumours about Raass' behaviour.

Catholic church sells big retirement village to help fund new cathedral
The Catholic diocese in Christchurch is selling a large retirement village to another church as it gets together the cash for its $100 million new cathedral and central city precinct. Archer Group, a retirement village operator owned by a Baptist Church trust, is buying Maryville Courts in the central city for an undisclosed sum. ...

New principal adding her own chapter
Jo Walshe is about to add her "little chapter" to St Kevin's College. The Oamaru school's assistant principal has been appointed as the new principal, taking over from Paul Olsen who is stepping down at the end of the year.

Commissioner 'blown away' by students' language skills
Young Kiwis are more multi-language capable and multiskilled than previous generations ever were, says Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon. That was made even more apparent by the youngsters at St Mary's Catholic Primary School as Mr Foon visited the school yesterday to promote New Zealand Chinese Language Week.

Secondary school students talk about Covid-19 interuptions
It's been another unsettling year for secondary school students because of Covid-19. Roncalli College students spoke to The Timaru Herald about how it has been for them, with schools closed from August 18 to September 9 during alert level 4 and then 3, forcing them to learn remotely, for the second time in two years.

Vatican to host interfaith appeal ahead of climate change summit
Ahead of a keenly anticipated UN summit on climate change in Glasgow, roughly 40 representatives of different religious traditions are expected to sign an appeal this week at the Vatican insisting on urgent action from political leaders to protect the world's environment. Brought together through a joint effort from the Holy See and the embassies of England and that of Italy to the Holy See, the religious leaders hope to inspire a renewed commitment ahead of the COP21 summit, to be held in Glasgow this November ...
