Auckland church leaders Christmas message: Christmas in the Rough
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12295276
The Christmas season can be a great magnifier. While it magnifies what is good, it also magnifies the pain. Yet Christmas is a time when we hear carols like Joy to the World. We pause to think about what is good and worthy of joy. This is the strange tension in the Christmas season: between the stresses and the celebrations. How do we walk this fine line and find balance between them? ...

Plenty of opportunity for spirit of giving
https://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/plenty-opportunity-spirit-giving
The expectations to provide presents and elaborate dinners during the Christmas holiday period can put pressure on already struggling families. Luckily, Dunedin's social agencies have made it easy for residents to give them a hand. The third major drive is the Dunedin Christian Helping Agencies Group's Christmas hampers. The group is made of Salvation Army, Presbyterian Support Otago, Methodist Mission, Catholic Social Services, and Anglican Family Care.

A school holiday programme in Palmerston North is getting into the giving spirit of Christmas. Holiday programme provider Nippers held a disco at St James' Catholic School on Friday. But instead of a standard gold coin entry, children were asked to donate an item of food for the Methodist Social Services and St Vincent de Paul for families in need.

Invercargill business leader John Prendergast moving north
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/118239790/invercargill-business-leader-john-prendergast-moving-north
Invercargill business leader John Prendergast is moving to Wellington to take on a new challenge. Prendergast, the chief executive of the Community Trust of Southland for 20 years until his controversial departure in 2017, said the timing was right to move on. When Prendergast left the Community Trust he took on a job as chief executive of the Southland Presbyterian Support which he has held for the past 18 months. But he has resigned and will start a new job as general manager of the Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington in February.

Catholic Cathedral College: Teenager killed in fatal rural Canterbury crash 'a talented and respectful boy'
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/118336433/teenager-killed-in-fatal-crash-rural-canterbury-named
A young boy killed in a rural Canterbury crash was "a good kid, who loved to play piano and sing with his dad", a family friend says. Jyren Estrella, 13, of Christchurch was killed in a crash at the intersection of Ellesmere and Tancreds roads, near Lincoln about 4.30pm on Saturday.

St Mary McKillop: South Auckland kids write book to challenge negative stereotypes about their community (text, video, audio)
https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/first-up/audio/2018727075/south-auckland-kids-write-book-to-challenge-negative-stereotypes-about-their-community
After being fed up with stories about multiple shootings, street fights and crime in South Auckland, 11 local school kids decided they wanted to tell a different story about their community. So they banded together, wrote and published a book called Where I Live and filled it with personal stories about their everyday experiences in South Auckland. Pockets of the area have some of the highest crime rates in the country and are ranked in the highest deprivation bracket but the 11 students - now published authors - of St Mary MacKillop Catholic School say there's more to South Auckland than that.

STATION XV

http://station15.co.nz/

Station XV: Episode 145 — Sorrow, settlement, synod, Scripture (December 17, 2019)

It's truly a bumper episode of The 15th Station for our Christmas episode, as the panel considers some of the big stories from home and abroad. The White Island volcano tragedy leads the show, as New Zealand tries to deal with another disaster. In Australia, one debate over religious freedom has concluded, with a rugby player and his employers reaching a settlement over a social media post paraphrasing Scripture. In Germany, the Church has embarked on a "synodal journey" that is offering both hope and concern, depending on who you ask. And back in NZ, plans are coming together for the construction of a new Catholic cathedral in Christchurch. From the 15th Station family (Anna, Donald, James and Gavin) to you and yours, we wish you a happy and holy Christmas.

The Hamilton Combined Christian Foodbank has experienced a surge this year in the numbers of people needing food help. Many are occupying motels due to the city's shortage of affordable housing, according to Wendy Nickalls, who is on the food bank trust board and is also the co-ordinator at Methodist City Action. Wendy brings both roles together in the lead-up to Christmas each year with a dedicated public appeal for food bank donations. That time has come for 2019.

It was a weekend of reflection for members of the St Patrick's Church at Rakauhauka during celebrations for the church's 125th Jubilee anniversary. Founded by Irish immigrants in 1894, descendants of some of the first parishioners were in Invercargill during the weekend to mark the special occasion.

For several years the nondescript cardboard file-box lay on a shelf gathering dust, largely ignored and overlooked by the office's occupants. That all changed one day in 1977, when Dr John Ross, a lecturer in the English Department, decided to peep inside it. "I was astounded and very excited," he recalls, on seeing the contents. For instead of finding discarded textbooks, he came across a rare early 17th century manuscript book. The manuscript is a translation into English, from Latin, of Francois Feu-ardent's Dialogi Septem (1594). "It is likely, though not certain, that It was indeed translated and handwritten by George Brown, who was a prominent English Catholic," Dr Ross says. Whenever Pope Francis welcomes a head of state, he hands them several gifts that usually range from medals to texts. No matter who the person is, however, there's one thing that's always in the mix: his first major document, written during the first months of his pontificate, which for many is the Magna Carta of this papacy. Evangelii Gaudium, or "The Joy of the Gospel," was published in 2013 and it develops Francis's key notions, from criticizing the "invisible hand" of the market to calling for an "ecclesial renewal." Few words, however, are mentioned more than pueblo. It appears 164 times in the Spanish edition, making it the most used noun in the document...

In 1938, American historian Crane Brinton nailed it in his famous work The Anatomy of Revolution: "The revolutionists have hitherto been acting as an organized and nearly unanimous group," he wrote, surveying the British, American, French and Russian revolutions, "but with the attainment of power it is clear that they are not united." Brinton's diagnosis comes to mind in light of two months of financial scandal and controversy in the Vatican, the latest twist to which came Wednesday with the pope's appointment of a veteran Italian banker as the new head of the Vatican's Financial Information Authority, its anti-money laundering and financial crime unit...

STATION XV

http://station15.co.nz/

Episode 144 — Canberra, Rome, Amazon, Wellington, Whangamomona (November 15, 2019)

The Station 15 crew was in the courtroom for one of the biggest announcements in the Church's legal history, as the High Court of Australia agreed that it would hear arguments why Cardinal George Pell's child sexual abuse convictions should be overturned. It wasn't quite that exciting for the New Zealand bishops, but they recently made their Ad Limina visit to Rome, meeting with Pope Francis and his key advisers. The bishops were there as the much-reported Synod on the Amazon unfolded, but it was hard to find the facts among the hysteria. Back in New Zealand, there's a push from a Maori organisation to get Pope Francis to apologise for the Church's role in colonising the country back in the 19th century. Things have been a bit quieter in Whangamomona, where a 100-year-old Catholic church has seen its last hurrah — as a place of Catholic worship, at least. A typically diverse episode awaits.

During their meeting with the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the Vatican's agency on sainthood nominations, they spoke about Aubert and her potential status as a saint. ?
