CHRISTMAS 2022

Christmas Season 2022: 'We can become God's presence to others'
At Christmas, we remember that "the Word became flesh and lived among us," says Cardinal John Dew in his Christmas message for 2022. The Archbishop of Wellington, who also serves as President of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops' Conference, reminds us that God's Word, God Himself, is at the heart of our lives and of our journey of faith. "We have God with us, Emmanuel, God, Who is passionately concerned about our lives and engaged in them."

A Christmas invitation: the Christmas message of Auckland's Church leaders
We love the beauty and simplicity of the first Christmas. We find ourselves in a cave filled with sheep, with Mary and Joseph pondering the mystery of the baby Jesus lying in the manger, trying to make sense of what the angel had said to each of them about the promised child ...

STATION XV (podcast)

Episode 180 — Pastors, Pew, Pope, Prayer, Poland (December 17, 2022)

For the Christmas episode, it's a typically international look at the life of the Church. The panels globetrot from Australia, where hard choices are being made on pastoral care for those accessing euthanasia, to the Christmas scenes in Rome and a call to prayer in New Zealand. A new Pew Research report assesses how religious practice was affected during COVID, including through violence, and we end with some more violence — by someone dressed up as a Christmas tree. No, seriously. We wish the Station 15 family a happy and holy Christmas.

Will the Catholic world rally to defend imperiled bishop in Eritrea?
Much of the Catholic world this week has been focused on Hong Kong, where 90-year-old Cardinal Joseph Zen and five other defendants were found guilty of failing to register a pro-democracy fund. Zen has been ordered to pay a fine of $500.

If you really want a Catholic bishop to worry about right now, a more harrowing choice probably would be Fikremariam Hagos Tsalim, the 52-year-old prelate of Segheneity in Eritrea. Appointed in 2012, Tsalim was arrested by the regime on Oct. 15 and is reportedly being held in the notorious Adi Abeito prison on the outskirts of the capital city of Asmara. At around the same time, two other Catholic priests were also arrested. As is par for the course in Eritrea, the three clerics have been detained without any legal proceedings or judicial review, they have no right to attorneys or to visitations, there's no process to appeal their arrests, and the government has not commented on their case ...

STATION XV (podcast)

Episode 179 — Abstinence, Bahrain, Campbell, Dioceses, Enlarging (November 19, 2022)

Don, James and Gavin metaphorically join Pope Francis on his Middle East trip, assessing the impact of his time in Bahrain. In New Zealand, men attending a retreat have been urged to stand up against relativism by a former bishop, while in other parts of the country they're trying to find new bishops. The Vatican has published the next document in the Synod on Synodality journey, put there doesn't appear to be any talk of reinstating abstinence from meat on Fridays. Maybe it would save the planet….

"The Lord calls some of his disciples to be priests, that is, he chooses some of the sheep from his flock and invites them to be shepherds of their brothers and sisters," the pope wrote in a speech prepared for a group of rectors and staff members of seminaries in Latin America ...
