Let your Christmas light shine on others: the Christmas message of the
Auckland Christian communities
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11563280
Tomorrow, the Sunday before Christmas, in churches and homes the world
over, people will be lighting the fourth candle in the Advent wreath.
In this centuries-old tradition, over the four Sundays before
Christmas, the lighting of the candles of the Advent (from the Latin
'to come') wreath symbolises the waiting and expectation as we look to
the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

has been closed 12 times since then by Israeli military orders - the
longest of which was for three years. Peter Bray reflects on Christmas
in Bethlehem and how the birth of Jesus is marked in a city under
occupation.

THE 15TH STATION PODCAST

Episode 99 – Wall to (almost) wall Pope Francis (December 16, 2015)
It's fair to say Pope Francis is dominating headlines around the
world, so he's doing the same on The 15th Station. Whether it's the
opening of the Jubilee Door – and Year of Mercy – or his calling for
swift action in response to the Paris climate talks, Francis continues
to be a media rock star. And apparently he's also something of a
musical rock star, with a new CD launched featuring the Pontiff.
There's other discussion of music on this month's show, with James,
Don and Gavin wondering if there's such a thing as "objectively good"
Church music. Merry Christmas from The 15th Station family and we'll
speak with you all in January for Episode 100!

Years from now, records will show that the special jubilee Year of
Mercy decreed by Pope Francis began on Dec. 8, 2015, the feast of the
Immaculate Conception. If you ask the pontiff himself, however, he'd
probably tell you it really got underway on Friday. That afternoon,
Francis headed across town to visit a hostel for the homeless run by
Caritas, the main diocesan charity in Rome, in order to open a "holy
door of charity" ...

Plus: the new name of colonialism, and 'all in' on climate change
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2015/11/28/for-pope-francis-wisdom-comes-from-the-poor/
Historically speaking, Christians always have been obsessed with
debating the proper sources of teaching authority. One of the towering
issues in the Protestant Reformation, for instance, was whether the
Bible alone or also Church authority can claim to provide binding
truth about God's will. Pope Francis, certainly recognizes the
importance of both Scripture and tradition. Yet it's also clear that
at the personal level, he prizes yet another font of wisdom with an
almost equally spiritual fervor. In a word, Francis takes his cues
from the poor...

Anglican appointment reveals continuity between Pope Francis and Benedict
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2015/11/25/anglican-appointment-reveals-continuity-between-pope-francis-and-benedict/
At the level of style, Pope Francis is obviously a somewhat jarring
contrast with his predecessor, emeritus Pope Benedict XVI. Francis
generally comes off as a warm Latin populist, Benedict more a cool
German intellectual. Leaders, however, promote either continuity or
rupture not primarily at the level of style but rather policy, and on
that front, one can make a case that Francis has a surprising amount
in common with Benedict. A new chapter in this largely untold story of
continuity came on Tuesday ...

THE 15TH STATION PODCAST

Episode 98 — Scandals, Surveys, Synods, Saints and Sinners (November 16, 2015)
Pope Francis isn't going to let the Vatican leaks and the associated
scandals slow down his papacy — and he's told some of Italy's Church
leaders as much in a major speech. It's maybe that attitude or just
Francis's demeanour, but his recent trip to the United States has seen
his popularity — and people's comfort with their own faith — improve.
That's happened while bishops and cardinals have been battling over
what the Synod on the Family really said about Communion for the
divorced and remarried. Perhaps we all just need to download a new app
to help us find (or stay on) the path to holiness.

Who's going to replace Francis? Maybe one of these guys
http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2015/11/17/whos-going-to-replace-francis-maybe-one-of-these-guys/
Next month Pope Francis will celebrate his 79th birthday, and by all
accounts he remains remarkably vigorous. There's no reason to believe
his papacy is nearing an end, and every reason to think it's full
steam ahead. On the other hand, Francis has dropped hints that his
might be a relatively brief run, and he's also spoken approvingly
about the example set by Pope Benedict XVI in resigning. Given his
capacity for surprise, it's entirely possible he'll blindside the
world with a decision to step aside just when it's least expected...

THE 15TH STATION PODCAST
http://station15.co.nz/

The Catholic community are not happy with new laws giving councils the
power to decide whether shops can be open on Easter Sunday. A new bill
passed its first reading on Tuesday night, which would enable local
authorities to choose whether or not to allow trading on the religious
holiday in a bid to let communities decide in different parts of the
country.

The Maori Party has renewed its call for 5 November to be recognised
as Parihaka Day to commemorate the sacking of the pacifist settlement
in Taranaki by government troops and militia in 1881. Caritas, the
Catholic Church's agency for justice, peace and development has also
been exploring the idea of Parihaka Day with the settlement.

A woman accused of burning down a church has thanked the judge after
her charge was dismissed. Yesterday, Judge Max Courtney ruled there
was insufficient evidence to prove Donna Joy Esma Mischeski was
involved in a fire which destroyed St Philomena's Church on January 6,

History is on the move with an 80-year-old Northland church inching
its way to a new home on Waiheke Island. The long-disused Catholic
church, across the road from the Towai Tavern on State Highway 1 south
of Kawakawa, was cut into three pieces on Monday and loaded onto a
truck for the long journey to Kawakawa Bay, southeast of Auckland.
