The head of the Catholic Church in New Zealand, Cardinal Tom Williams, will have to smooth the waters at a meeting of Christian leaders in Wellington next week. His church has been under international fire after an announcement from the Vatican this week appeared to assert the primacy of Catholicism. In its Declaration Dominus Iesus, the Vatican says: "The ecclesiastical communities that have not preserved the valid Episcopate" and do not recognize the Pope as their spiritual leader "are not Churches in the proper sense".

The "Dominus Iesus" declaration from the Vatican, has angered the Anglican Church, with the Archbishop of Canterbury saying it has set back relations between the churches. 'Sister on a mission to Waikato's isolated '

Rumbling around winding west coast roads for days on end to visit the most isolated homes is the mission of June Hickland. The Catholic nun spends at least two weeks of every month travelling in her camper van carrying out the Hauroto Mission.
