Here are summaries of the new links on the bishops' Jubilee news page:
[October 28-29: Jubilee of Sportspeople ] The Holy See will send a message to the world with the two most important events of the Sports Jubilee: a game with soccer stars, and a wheelchair race for the handicapped. These two events, symbolizing the "millionaire sport" and the "sport of sacrifice", are part of the programme for this weekend's Jubilee of sports ...
The President of the Italian Sports Center, Edio Constantini, knows the problems of sports today. Who thinks of the one who is excluded too early, at 9-10 years of age, because he cannot dribble past a speeding opponent? Who teaches parents not to oppress their children with the exaggerated desire for affirmation and success that doesn't even interest children? ... and they say there is no need for sports with values! ..."

'An Old Labour warhorse who portrayed rival as a Tory toff ' The Independent 24 October 2000 http://www.independent.co.uk/news/UK/Politics/2000-10/warhorse241000.shtml As a staunch Catholic and unashamedly "Old Labour" backbencher, Michael "Mick" Martin would appear at first sight to be an unlikely force for modernisation of the House of Commons. Not only will he be the first Catholic Speaker since the Reformation, he will also be the first bagpipe player and fluent Italian speaker to take up the post ... [He'll also be only the second Speaker in several centuries who is *not* a Freemason. The first was his predecessor, Betty Boothroyd. ML]
'Singer, teacher, opera director.: A life dedicated to spreading the joy of music and song ' Otago Daily Times 28 October (photo) http://www1.odt.co.nz/cgi-bin/search-display-story-online-new?PATH=30Oct2000/edi\ torial/content/KPG39E7569GH.html&WORDS=catholic&DB=Editorial Dunedin has produced many outstanding classical singers. One such was Geoffrey Bertrand de Lautour, who died recently, aged 78, in Wellington where, after a short international career, he had settled for the rest of his life as a singer, director and music teacher. He was educated at Christian Brothers High School, where, in typical Catholic school fashion, there was a prominent place for music and especially for singing ...
