CATHOLIC PRESS & WEB TV
Catholictv.net
http://catholictv.net/
A team based at the Catholic Communications Office in Wellington has opened a Website called 'Catholictv.net' to broadcast locally-produced Catholic video programmes on the Internet. The technical quality is not great at present but the team are determined to improve it and broaden the variety of programming. Certainly, there is tremendous potential for developing this service, for example by producing a video magazine of the kaleidoscope of people and projects within the Catholic Church in NZ.
Programmes currently available to view: * Generosity and voluntary service: interviews with a volunteer at the Sisters of Compassion Wellington soup kitchen, and its co-ordinator Sr Margaret Mary; and with Anne Dickinson, the directory of Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand, our bishops' agency for justice, peace and development. * Sisters of Mercy: Vocations within the vocation. An interview with Anna who recently entered the Sisters' novitiate.

'Government treads on charities' toes ' NZ Herald 10 Aug 2001 http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?thesection=business&thesubsection=&st\ oryID=206552 Finance Minister Michael Cullen says the purpose of the review of how charities are taxed is not to reduce the level of support the Government gives through the tax system, but to ensure that it is well targeted, transparent and can be monitored. Its critics say it embodies a simplistic understanding of charities' business activities and financial management. The critics believe it will impose compliance costs that charities can ill afford........
'A city at prayer' (photo) NZ Herald 11 Aug 2001 http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?thesection=news&thesubsection=&storyI\ D=206470 Prayer is as hard to define as air is to catch in your hand. It is a thing of utmost simplicity and utter mystery; a reaching towards holiness. It has been said that prayer is to religion what rational thought is to philosophy. Described by Teresa of Avila, a 16th-century Spanish mystic, prayer is "an intimate friendship, a frequent conversation held alone with the Beloved".....
'Professor's plea saves some history ' (photo) Waikato Times 11 August 2001 http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,899473a1601,FF.html Nearly 60 years have passed since she said it, but Paul Day chuckles at the young Italian woman's words about 50 Kiwi POWs proudly heading to church each Sunday evening in their best battle dress. "Oh, we did like to watch you marching." His eyes sparkle as he talks about the Kiwi soldiers standing in Prati Nuovi's church of Saint Giovanni (St John), not understanding a word of the latin service. Now Prof Day translates an Italian newspaper story Once Upon a Time There Was Prati Nuovi about this professor from a "very far distant town" who helped save what means so much to him.
'All Blacks get a little divine inspiration ' (photo) NZ Herald 11 Aug 2001 http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?thesection=news&thesubsection=&storyI\ D=206823 11.08.2001 By SCOTT MacLEOD Nun-power may be the biggest secret weapon the All Blacks possess. For decades, the Sisters of Mercy in Dunedin have prayed for All Black ascendancy with startling results - the Wallabies* have never won a test at Carisbrook. The keenest is Sister Mary-Pat McEvoy, who prays before every 'Brook game involving the All Blacks*, Otago and Highlanders. The nuns pray for good weather, no injuries and a good clean game. And when the local super-boot is kicking "we say, 'Please Lord, help Tony Brown kick this goal'." * ('All Blacks' and 'Wallabies' are the New Zealand and Australian national rugby football teams. The Wallabies beat the All Blacks 23-15 and kicker Tony Brown didn't have a nice day. On the other hand, the weather was good, there were no injuries and they had a good clean game. That's something, I suppose ... ML) Match report: http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,899473a1601,FF.html
