Rewiring, replumbing, ceiling regibbing and 2.5km of fireprotection wiring
have all contributed to the $500,000 refurbishment budget for the former
Christian Brothers’ residence edging out to $750,000. Developers Rob and
Shelley McMeeken, who bought the 1920s building for an undisclosed sum in
January, have taken the 50% budget increase in their stride, emphasising the
quality trademanship required to retain the building’s historical heritage.

Vatican: Don't Knock Science
http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,69485,00.html?tw=wn_tophead_5
Vatican City - A Vatican cardinal said Thursday the faithful should listen
to what secular modern science has to offer, warning that religion risks
turning into "fundamentalism" if it ignores scientific reason. Cardinal Paul
Poupard, who heads the Pontifical Council for Culture, made the comments at
a news conference on a Vatican project to help end the "mutual prejudice"
between religion and science that has long bedeviled the Roman Catholic
Church and is part of the evolution debate in the United States...

How C.S. Lewis, the beloved creator of Narnia, became the hottest theologian
of 2005 (2 pages)
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1124316,00.html
C.S.Lewis's popularity extends beyond the Borders children's section. This
year HarperSanFrancisco, which publishes some of the best known of his
dozens of adult titles, including Mere Christianity (a collection of those
radio talks) and The Screwtape Letters (a set of funny-creepy faux missives
from a senior devil to his nephew), sold 843,000 copies, twice as many as in
2001. Multiple books about Lewis debut annually; this year's crop features
Jacobs' biography and Jack's Life (Broadman & Holman) by Lewis' stepson
Douglas Gresham. In 1947, a TIME cover story hailed Lewis as "one of the
most influential spokesmen for Christianity in the English-speaking world."
Now, 58 years later (and 42 after his death, in 1963), he could arguably be
called the hottest theologian of 2005...
A Pope of Quiet Surprises, by George Weigel
Newsweek

When the newly elected Pope Benedict XVI first appeared on the loggia of St.
Peter's Basilica this past April, he was smiling broadlyâ€"a surprise,
perhaps, for those accustomed to the cartoon of Joseph Ratzinger as "God's
Rottweiler." Benedict XVI's happiness was that of a man who had been
liberated to be himself after subordinating his personality for 23 years to
the work John Paul II had asked him to do...
