The grief-lined road to memorials and funerals of West Coast miners is well trod. That wrenching tradition continued yesterday as the 29 men who died in the Pike River coalmine disaster on November 19 were remembered at a poignant, deeply moving service at Omoto Racecourse near Greymouth.

While Greymouth's Christmas parade had gathered the community in the afternoon, in the morning hundreds had attended the first of the private memorials. Mourners packed St Patrick's Catholic Church to farewell Michael Monk, one of the lost 29 - on what would have been his 24th birthday.

Balloons replaced candles as the birthday of one of the Pike River Mine 29 was celebrated yesterday in the first individual memorial service for the disaster victims. Michael Monk would have been 24 yesterday, and to mark the occasion 24 balloons were released at the St Patrick's Catholic Church in Greymouth.

More than 200 people prayed during a special mass in Blenheim last night for the miners who lost their lives in the Pike River mining disaster. The names of all 29 miners were read out during the mass at St Mary’s Church, led by Father Alan Roberts.

We are not likely to forget the day we buried Aunt Tui. In an unhappy coincidence, we mourners stuffed into the small Catholic church in Murchison last Wednesday were asked to pray for the Pike River Coal mine families at about the time another blast removed any flicker of hope.
