The Holy Family Catholic Church in Wanaka was blessed by Bishop Colin Campbell at a special Mass this month to celebrate the opening. Up to 300 people filled the church, which was designed by Sarah Scott Architects and cost $1.5 million-$2 million to build. The Most Rev Campbell, giving a homily to the congregation, described the church as a "family home" for the Catholic faith.

A Christchurch school says most of their students were out on the field when an earthquake hit. St Bedes College spokeswoman, Sally Bird, says the earthquake hit during the school's lunch-hour. She says most of the boys at the school were out on the field. Ms Bird says parents have started to pick up their sons, but students who are still there and school borders, are being looked after. Sally Bird says there was no damage to the school - in the suburb of Papanui.
