Legal euthanasia kills justice for all, by John Kleinsman
http://www.stuff.co.nz/sunday-star-times/columnists/6865984/Legal-euthanasia-kills-justice-for-all
As the spokesperson of a Catholic bioethics centre, there are some who discount my message because of my religious affiliation, rather than on the basis of its merits. As two commentators noted in response to comments I recently made about the dangers of legalising euthanasia: "I am sick of the religious trying to force their narrow views on society...

It was an impressive fountain. It had a figure of a small boy holding a fish and eight lions. Water tumbling out of the fish's head at the top and dribbled out of the lions' mouths into the bottom pool. The fountain was a gift to Hawera Hospital from Irishman Laurence Milmoe, a military settler who had taken up land at Keteonetea, near future Normanby.

Bishop Pompallier brought new media to the Maori

Many in the Catholic community are wary of new media, finding it foreign and confusing. For those who have not been forced to use it in their workplace, the challenge of embracing digital formats often feels like too much hard work for little tangible benefit. Yet just last week, on a quick visit to New Zealand, I discovered a story of how, more than 150 years ago, the Church embraced new media with a zeal and passion that breathed new life into a whole culture, and transformed the lives of thousands of people...

Dark days that led to the light of God (photo)

They were lazy, hazy nights. Political researcher Laura Adshead, a striking young blonde, was relaxing in a bar on the Kings Road. It was a Friday evening and she had brought her new boyfriend, David, to meet her childhood best friend. The year was 1990. To passers-by, the gathering was unremarkable. This was the breeding ground of twinset-and-pearl Sloane Rangers after all, and this group did not stand out. How things change. This week, Adshead was revealed to have turned her back on a life of drugs and alcohol to become a nun. Now aged 44, she's committed to a life of celibacy and prayer as Sister John Mary. Her closely cropped hair is hidden by a traditional wimple. And who was that devoted boyfriend? UK Prime Minister David Cameron.

The flow-on effects of the Christchurch earthquake will cost the Dunedin Catholic diocese about $300,000 this year, general manager Stuart Young says.
Increased insurance premiums were likely to cost an extra $200,000, with the rest going on detailed earthquake assessments of seven of the diocese's most at-risk churches and buildings.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

Recognize martyrs around the world by canonizing one of their own
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/recognize-martyrs-around-world-canonizing-one-their-own

Once again, Christians found themselves on the firing line last Sunday, with 19 people killed in Nigeria and one in Kenya in attacks on three churches. Those atrocities, alas, have rated no more than a blip on the global radar screen, largely because such things have become chillingly familiar. Every time something like this happens, the Vatican, to its credit, is usually quick to speak out.
