LENT 2013
Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand: Lent Resources Online: http://www.caritas.org.nz/resources/lent
Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving in preparation for Easter. In 2013 it began on Ash Wednesday 13 February and continues to Easter.
The theme for the Bishops' Lent Appeal 2013, taken from a Papal letter to the Church in the Pacific, is: Follow faithfully the way, Tell courageously the truth, Live joyfully the life. Kia pono te whai atu i te huarahi, Kia maia te whakapuaki i te pono, Kia harikoa te manawa i te oranga.
The Lent Appeal is run by Caritas on behalf of New Zealand's Catholic Bishops to support its work of charity and justice for the world's poorest – in New Zealand and overseas.
Resources - available at http://www.caritas.org.nz/resources/lent - have been prepared for parishes, schools, small groups and the wider community. Olivina Tu'iono from Caritas Tonga is also visiting schools and parishes throughout New Zealand from 9 February-10 March to share her experience working with poor and marginalised people in Tonga.

Keeping the old faith
Christianity in New Zealand is facing a dilemma: Get sexy or risk being trampled under an onslaught of non-believers. Roman Catholicism traditionally avoids sexiness, but with a new pope on the horizon, could the ''old lady'' be learning some new tricks? ...
Imports bolster shrinking flock of priests
By the time Dennis Nacorda retires, he may be one of only a handful of Catholic priests left in Wellington. This year, the 34-year-old Filipino is one of only two men who will be ordained as a priest for the Wellington diocese, an area stretching from Levin to Kaikoura...
Kiwi Catholic representative heads to Rome (full text)
A representative of New Zealand's Catholic Church is heading to Rome today to witness the election of the next Pope. Cardinals from around the world have already gathered for pre-conclave talks. Catholic Church spokeswoman and Papal Dame, Lyndsay Freer was also in Italy for the election of Pope Benedict when Pope John Paul the second died. "This will be very historical and very moving and significant for me, because I've already been there once, and here we are just eight years later going through much the same thing again." Lyndsay Freer says she'll be staying close to St Peter's Square so she'll be right amongst the action.
A Bolt From The Blue, by Brother Pat Lynch, CEO of the NZ Catholic Education Office
We all knew that the asteroid labeled DA 14 would come close to earth as it passed by at 27,700 kilometres above the earth in mid-February. About the same time, Pope Benedict, almost like a bolt from the blue, announced his resignation ...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC - John L. Allen Jr
Conclave 2013: It's governance, stupid … but who's the governor?
If it wasn't already, it's become abundantly clear in the week since Benedict's papacy ended and the sede vacante began that governance -- or, if one prefers, business management -- is a titanic concern. Yet if the 115 cardinals who will soon file into the Sistine Chapel seem in basic agreement about the question facing them, they don't appear to have an equally clear answer about who the right man is to be that governor...
