Sister Loyola Galvin and Jess Feast
http://podcast.radionz.co.nz/sat/sat-20130727-1108-sister_loyola_galvin_and_jess_feast-048.mp3
Sister Loyola Galvin, from the Home of Compassion in the Wellington
suburb of Island Bay, was named national NZ Gardener of the Year 2008
by NZ Gardener magazine, and interviewed twice on the programme in
2008. Filmmaker Jess Feast was inspired by those interviews to make a
documentary film about Sister Loyola, Gardening With Soul, which
receives its world premiere in Wellington on 27 July at the 2013 New
Zealand International Film Festival.

NZ Church Census

Underway right now is the first comprehensive census of churches in
this country since early last century. The Mission Koru Report expects
to reveal a surprising growth in the number of churches and an
emerging diversity in both denominations and ethnicity. Associate
Professor Peter Lineham of Massey University is one of the researchers
behind the census and the author of articles on the history of the
Christian church in New Zealand. He discusses history, methodology and
changing paradigms with Spiritual Outlook producer Justin Gregory, who
asks him whether the census will reveal more about New Zealander than
just our church-going habits:

Court if necessary to save Euphrasie House from demolition.

When 17- year- old Giuseppe Barnao left the volcanic island of
Stromboli in 1895, he was emigrating to a small, unfamiliar country
thousands of miles away – Nuova Zelanda. Giuseppe and his younger
brother Bartolo spent the rest of their lives in this country –
hardworking model Kiwis, founders of an iconic fishing industry and,
along with their families, respected by their local communities. The
colourful, sprawling story of how and why they planted their Italian
roots here is told by Vincent Moleta in his absorbing book Family
Business: An Italian Kiwi Story...

Father Tony Alex was not in the best place to ride out the big one. St
Gerard's Monastery is famous, beautiful – and earthquake-prone. Many
millions would be needed to bring it up to standard, as the building's
owners had warned only recently. But when the 6.5 magnitude earthquake
struck at 5.09pm on Sunday, St Gerard's ''didn't sway much at all'',
says Father Tony, the priest at
St Gerard's church.

It's not too often you see a church travelling down the roads in rural
Canterbury. But today it was en route from its old home as the
Catholic church in Colgate to Racecourse Hill Homestead, near
Darfield.

Pot still boils in Rome while Francis is away
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/pot-still-boils-rome-while-francis-away

I'm in Rio de Janeiro this week, watching Francis wow Brazil. The trip
has brought a little bit of everything: crowds so pumped up for the
pope they created security nightmares, protestors pushed back with
tear gas (they were mad at the government, not so much the pope),
Francis at his pastoral best at the Marian shrine of Aparecida, and a
powerful message of solidarity with the poor in a Rio slum. The mere
fact Francis is out of town, however, doesn't mean his problems in
Rome have taken a vacation...
