More than 8000 Catholics gathered at the CBS Arena in Christchurch
yesterday to celebrate the conclusion of the Year of Faith. The mass
was celebrated by Bishop Barry Jones, the Catholic Bishop of
Christchurch, and was part of a day of activities including a cultural
festival and choirs. The bishop's pastoral office director, Mike
Stopforth, said most masses in the greater Christchurch area had been
combined and it was a chance to celebrate faith together. A choral
performance featured more than 400 children, aged between 8 and 13,
from 24 Canterbury schools.

Archbishop David Moxon grew up in Palmerston North and went to
Freyberg High School. He was in the All Saints' choir, and attended
Massey University before doing his theological training. Now, he has
been entrusted as a pivotal player in building relationships between
the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches at the highest level. And
John Hornblow and Jenny Boyack have helped in the task ...

"If you are not affected by the Philippines disaster, you can't be
human. It is a worldwide issue of humanity which goes beyond the
boundaries of culture and religion." The words of Dargaville Catholic
church priest Father Alfredo Garcia are stern yet warm, as he explains
what it's like for a Filipino community miles away from their
typhoon-ravaged home country.

St Patrick's Basilica attracted a steady stream of visitors on
Saturday during celebrations for a dual anniversary. The Oamaru parish
was celebrating its 140th anniversary and also the 120th anniversary
of the laying of the foundation stone in 1893 by Bishop Moran for the
Francis W. Petrie-designed basilica.

The secret to a long life is eating proper food and ''wanting to
live'', Wellingtonian Peggy Horne says. Mrs Horne said she was amazed
to have reached 100 years, many of which were spent with her two
children, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her
Catholic faith was the key to staying positive over the years, she
said...

Francis and a church that breathes with both lungs
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/francis-and-church-breathes-both-lungs

There's no mistaking the fact that Pope Francis' new apostolic
exhortation, "Joy of the Gospel," released Tuesday by the Vatican,
amounts to a call for fairly sweeping change on multiple fronts. Yet
there's a deeper sense in which "The Joy of the Gospel" stands in
clear continuity with Francis' immediate predecessor, Benedict XVI,
and in particular his 2009 social encyclical Caritas in Veritate. In
effect, both documents amount to full-frontal assaults not on Catholic
doctrine or discipline, but on contemporary Catholic sociology...
