Palmerston North's St Peter's College principal David Olivier was the
principal of Christian Brothers' College Mount Edmund in Pretoria. On
the day of Nelson Mandela's famous inauguration in 1994, between 100
and 150 of Olivier's students were used as ushers for the celebration
in recognition of the Catholic school's decision to open their doors
to all races after the Soweto uprising in 1976.
Alternatives to East-West Link sought (full text; audio report)
http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/regional/229935/alternatives-to-east-west-link-sought
Auckland Transport has proposed four possible routes for the $1
billion East-West Link through Otahuhu and Mangere, which some
residents say could destroy up to 500 homes. A meeting of the
council's infrastructure committee on Wednesday voted to ask the
transport agency to consider options that don't involve major roads
and consult thoroughly with the public. A spokesperson for the Mangere
Catholic Parishes, Teresa Ah Wa, says despite calls to look at
alternatives, she is not confident that communities will be consulted.
She believes the current proposals are violating people's rights, and
parishioners fear the worst for the community and schools in the area.
A petition against the link with 4000 signatures was presented to
Parliament on Tuesday.
Peter Calder: Mission incredible - 110 years of care (photo)

Seafarers of the world have found a warm welcome at the waterfront
centre for more than a century.
The newest development, fronted by Josh Emett of MasterChef fame,
carries an echo of the area's past in its name, Seafarers. The
building's original purpose has not entirely passed into history. It
survives in the Auckland International Seafarers Centre, on the first
floor of the building's Quay St frontage. It's all that remains of the
Mission to Seafarers (in less inclusive days it was called the Mission
to Seamen, of course)...
Pastoral care of continuing importance (photo)

Pastoral care and peacemaking remain key parts of an ancient tradition
of chaplaincy, Emeritus Prof Colin Gibson said last night.
Prof Gibson, a former long-serving member of the Otago Tertiary
Chaplaincy Trust Board, was speaking at an anniversary dinner to
celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Otago chaplaincy
service in 1963.

I've never been able to use the term "heart-warming" without a
slightly derisive sneer. But a couple of days ago I watched a film
that really was heart-warming, in the sense that you left the theatre
feeling better about life and your fellow human beings than you might
have been when you walked in. Gardening with Soul is a feature-length
documentary about Sister Loyola Galvin.

Syrian Christians; pope-mania; and a looming check-up on Vatican finances
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/syrian-christians-pope-mania-and-looming-check-vatican-finances
Syria's roll call of missing Christians continues to grow. In April,
Islamic militants kidnapped two Orthodox prelates. In July, the same
fate befell Italian Fr. Paolo Dall'Oglio, a well-known Jesuit pioneer
in Christian/Muslim relations and anti-Assad activist. Given the
courage and persistence shown by the country's religious women, it was
probably inevitable that sooner or later it would be their turn, and
that's precisely what happened this week...
