Close to 200 St Philomena's Catholic Church members gathered for
prayers and hymns as they coped with a testing time.
The 50-year-old New Plymouth church, in Brooklands Rd, was destroyed
by fire on Monday, leaving the Catholic community devastated by the
loss.

The fire that razed St Philomena's Catholic Church on Monday also took
with it a much treasured school library. However, St Pius has since
been inundated with calls from people keen to offer money to get the
library going again. So, school board of trustee member Louise
Walters-Uhila set up the St Pius School Library Relief Fund.

When Sister Loyola Galvin received a letter from the Government, she
thought it must be a traffic fine. The 91-year-old nun examined her
conscience, before discovering it was from the prime minister, to tell
her she was becoming a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Girls from poorer suburbs may be shut out of a top Catholic girls'
school in one of Auckland's richest suburbs when an enrolment zone is
introduced this year. Baradene College of the Sacred Heart, in
Remuera's Victoria Ave, is in the final stages of seeking approval
from the Ministry of Education to increase its roll progressively over
the next few years.

A lack of work for graduates means former Otago University Students'
Association president Francisco Hernandez is heading to Wellington. Mr
Hernandez is leaving Dunedin after being involved in student politics
in the city for almost five years, which included spending last year
as president of OUSA.

New Zealand's national anthem has been officially protected by the
United Nations, a gesture the writer's North Shore ancestors
appreciate. Brothers Clive and David Bracken from Hillcrest and
Forrest Hill have always taken pride in their great-grandfather, poet
Thomas Bracken.

Acting with social responsibility the essence of leadership

When Time magazine recently named Pope Francis Person of the Year
2013, the general reaction around the world was one of approval.
Known as the people's pope, Francis has captured the imaginations of
millions, and not just in the Catholic world. He raised hopes like
only a few leaders before; Nelson Mandela comes to mind, or perhaps
Barack Obama. So, how important are ''world leaders'' and what
distinguishes Pope Francis from other leaders such as Adolf Hitler,
the Time magazine Person of the Year 1938?

The clergy trade; Melady; pope-watch; and The Boston Globe
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/clergy-trade-melady-pope-watch-and-boston-globe
Pope Francis recently issued a blunt warning about what he called a
"novice trade" within religious orders these days, quoting a line from
the Filipino bishops and deliberately using an Italian term that
evokes memories of the slave trade. Such situations, however, are only
a small piece of a much bigger picture, which is a growing migration
of priests and religious in the Catholic church from the "global
south" to the north, despite the fact that the overall Catholic
population is shifting in precisely the opposite direction. To discuss
the promise and peril of this broader "trade" in clergy, I turned to
Philip Jenkins of Baylor University, one of the English-speaking
world's leading experts on global Christianity...
