Head of Catholic Education to step down

Brother Patrick Lynch, Chief Executive of the New Zealand Catholic
Education Office, will step down from his role later in the year, at a
time to be determined, announced Geoffrey Ricketts, the Chairman of
the Board of Directors of the New Zealand Catholic Education Office,
today.

Cambridge's much loved parish priest has announced his retirement.
Father Monsignor David Bennett has been a priest at St Peter's
Catholic Church in Cambridge for the past 14 years and said at age 71
it was time for him to pass the role onto someone else.

The Catholic Bishop in Christchurch is warning that the celebration of
Mass in Te Reo Maori is diminishing, which has prompted the Maori arm

A Wanaka man who indecently assaulted a child has been sentenced to
community detention. Gregory Gerard Basil Clarke (55), who has strong

The Government's controversial charter school experiment faces more
strife, with the principal of the latest school under investigation by
the Teachers Council. James Haggett stepped down as deputy principal
in charge of curriculum at Auckland Catholic boys' school St Peter's
College in June after allegedly wrongly reporting student assessments
over a sustained period. He resigned in August.

On the list of what Italian writer Vittorio Messori calls the
"perplexities" about Pope Francis, meaning things that are sometimes
hard to figure out, one item probably has to be the pontiff's attitude
towards missionary efforts. On one hand, Francis talks constantly
about the imperative of evangelization and spreading the faith. On the
other, Francis rarely misses an opportunity to condemn what he calls
"proselytism." He famously called it "solemn nonsense" in a 2013
interview, and during an ecumenical vespers service Sunday evening at
the Basilica of St. Paul's Outside the Walls he called on all
Christian churches to reject "proselytism and competition in all their
forms" ...
